  1. Accelerating SVC implementations with Softek TDMFfor Business Partners 16 April 2009

  2. Agenda • Storage virtualization with SAN Volume Controller (SVC) • Value of accelerating SVC implementations • Transparent Data Migration Facility (TDMF) role • SVC and TDMF use cases • Value for SVC seller • Simplified TDMF/implementation service pricing for SVC • Call to action • Contacts and Links

  3. Logical Representation Virtualization Physical Resources Storage virtualization is . . . Technology that makes one set of resources look and feel like another set of resources, preferably with more desirable characteristics… A logical representation of resources not constrained by physical limitations* • Hides some of the complexity • Adds or integrates new function with existing services • Can be nested or applied to multiple layers of a system Some of our clients have data in environments not supported by SVC, that they want managed by SVC Source: Evaluator Group

  4. 25% capacity 55% capacity SAN SAN SANVolume Controller 50% capacity 95% capacity Infrastructure simplification with SAN Volume Controller Traditional Storage Area Network (SAN) • Capacity is isolated in SAN islands • Multiple management points • Sub-optimal capacity utilization • Capacity is purchased for, and owned by individual processors SAN Volume Controller • Combines capacity into a single pool • Uses storage assets more efficiently • Single management point • Capacity purchases can be deferred until the physical capacity of the SAN reaches a trigger point

  5. RAW Capacity system Usable Storage empty Written Data data What is “data”? • Storage Capacity: In any customer environment, storage capacity can be classified into 3-broad categories: • RAW (or Procured) Capacity: This is the total storage capacity of all the storage devices in the customer’s environment • Usable Storage: Usable (also referred to as Allocated on the mainframe) is defined as follows: Subset of Raw Capacity that can have data written to it for productive use. Usable Storage is raw capacity less capacity that cannot be written to but that, nonetheless, consumes disk capacity. Examples of non-productive capacity: operating/file systems, journaling, parity, RAID, mirroring, formatting, and spare drives • Written Data:The sub-set of Usable Storage that has data written to it

  6. Assess—What and how much data must be moved from source environment to target environment Plan—How data is moved from source to target environment Move—Move data from source to target environment Validate—Verify data was successfully moved as planned from source to target environment What is data “migration”? 7. There is significant value in accelerating SVC implementations • Client value: • Enables clients to get the benefits of virtualization faster: reduced cost and complexity of managing storage, improved business continuity, improved storage utilization, improved personnel productivity, high availability and performance • SVC seller value: • Moving data FROM storage with large numbers of small Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) to storage managed by SVC enables rapid deployment of SVC • Moving data BETWEEN isolated SVC clusters for load balancing enables expansion of the SVC infrastructure • Moving data FROM unsupported SVC devices TO storage managed by SVC can drive need for more disk and more SVC nodes, as well as potentially more services • Moving data from a data center with no SVC’s to a new data center that is virtualized with SVC’s, for consolidation or relocation eliminates the need for infrastructure change in the old data center Partner Internal use only – NOT to be shared with client

  8. SoftekTDMFacceleratesIBMSystemStorageSANVolumeControllerimplementationSoftekTDMFacceleratesIBMSystemStorageSANVolumeControllerimplementation • TDMF focuses on enterprise data migration • The migration of data can be done at any time without disrupting applications…which will enable clients to accelerate SVC implementations • GTS provides structured low risk migration services using TDMF • TDMF can: • Provide migration between SVC clusters • Enable consolidation into a smaller number LUNs as data is migrated into SVC • Significantly reduce the amount of time required to move data, compared to manual methods • TDMF can facilitate consolidation of data centers into fully virtualized and more power and space efficient environments • TDMF can transparently and non-disruptively migrate data FROM unsupported devices TO devices under SVC management, while SVC will handle the migrations of data on supported devices

  9. 5 use cases - accelerating SVC implementation with TDMF • Case 1: Migrating data from a large number of non virtualized LUNs to an SVC managed storage environment • Case 2: Migrating data between Data Centers in a Data Center relocation or consolidation • Case 3: Migrating data between separate SVC environments within the Data Center (Intra Data Center) or between Data Centers (Inter Data Center) • Case 4: Migrating data from fully provisioned storage into thinly-provisioned storage managed by the SVC • Case 5:Migrating data FROM unsupported devices and INTO SVC environments

  10. Large number of small LUNs Logical Volume Logical Volume TDMF will consolidate smaller LUNs into a SVC virtualized environment with fewer large LUNs Facilitates migration from unsupported configurations into SVC managed storage environment Physical Volume Physical Volume Case 1: Migrating data from a large number of non virtualized LUNs to a SVC managed storage environment

  13. ‘Thick’ or Traditional Thin Provisioning Free Space Free Space Savings $$$ Volume A Allocated Space Allocated Space Free Space Volume A Allocated Space Allocated Space Volume B Volume B Physical Disk Logical Volumes Physical Disk Logical Volumes Case 4: Migrating data from fully provisioned storage into thinly-provisioned storage managed by the SVC (1 of 2) Free space must be allocated to each volume, and therefore to each application/business function to allow for future growth. Some volumes may be under-utilized, yet the space allocated to them is unavailable for use by other applications. Free space is pooled and available to any volume/application that requires it, this yields higher disk utilization and drives cost savings as less physical disk is needed to satisfy business demands.

  14. Windows Server TDMF Windows Migration SVC TDMF Fully Utilized Thin provisioned Storage Partially used fully provisioned storage Case 4: Migrating data from fully provisioned storage into thinly-provisioned storage managed by the SVC (2 of 2) • TDMF for Windows will support migrating data from fully provisioned storage into thinly-provisioned storage provisioned by the SVC • This will allow clients to not only move rapidly to a virtualized environment, but also reclaim unallocated storage at the same time.

  15. NEW: DS8100s (SVC Managed) 1010101010101010101 1010111101011111010 1010101101010000110 0101010000110101111 1011101000101001110 TDMF Unsupported frames to be retired or Re-provisioned elsewhere Within a Customer’s Data Center Case 5: Migrating data FROM unsupported devices and INTO SVC environments • Devices that are not supported by SVC cannot be attached to the SVC node. The data on these devices cannot be migrated into the SVC environment using SVC’s migration tools • Using TDMF to migrate data to the target SVC enabled environment : • Accelerates SVC implementation • Minimizes outage requirements for implementation • Reduces labor required by up to 75%

  16. SVC license fees: $57,0001(38 additional TBs) Disk sales: $139,7002(38 additional TBs) • 1 source: SVC Product Marketing • 2 source: 38 Terabytes * $3.59/GB * 1000 GB/1TB Value to Business Partner seller of using TDMF to accelerate SVC Implementation • Clients have to address bringing data from unsupported environments under management of SVC • Manual migration of this data into SVC is slow. Using TDMF can greatly accelerate migration of this data into SVC environment • The more data migrated under SVC, the greater the need for additional storage arrays and additional SVC control units. • TDMF enables Business Partner seller to: Sell more SVC nodes to manage the disk arrays, sell more disk to hold the data that was in unsupported environments sooner, and sell more disk to hold the data that was in remote SVC environments • Example: Accelerating SVC implementation in a 150 TB environment can drive $197Kincremental Business Partner disk and SVC revenue, as well as $135k in TDMF license fees and support services, plus any additional services revenue

  17. Simplified and aggressive discounted pricing: TDMF with SVC (1 of 2) • Program pricingapproach for SVC opportunities • Prices apply only for existing SVC clients and/or new transactions which include significant SVC content • Only one data point is needed to obtain price quotation – total open systems usable storage capacity in the client’s environment (NOT unsupported capacity) • Solution List Price tables located on PartnerWorld. • Solution price from IBM includes: • Software license to cover use of TDMF • Year 1 support services (maintenance) are mandatory • Business Partners should include their own implementation services and/or migration services • Licensing is based on one simple # - total open systems usable storage capacity • Usable storage:* (or writeable) • The subset of raw capacity that can have data written to it for productive use. • Raw capacity less capacity that cannot be written to but that, nonetheless, consumes disk capacity. • Examples (of the delta between usable and raw capacity) would be: operating/file systems, journaling, parity, RAID, mirroring, formatting, and spare drives. 18. Simplified and aggressive discounted pricing: TDMF with SVC (2 of 2) NOTE – These prices are only applicable for existing SVC clients and/or new transactions which include significant SVC content • Indicative Pricing Process (please refer to List Price table in PartnerWorld) • Determine client’s total open systems usable capacity (total usable capacity, NOT unsupported capacity); • Find appropriate band level that corresponds with the current total open systems usable capacity in the client’s environment • Determine solution price • Determine license list price and apply the appropriate license discount and apply to list price • Determine support services list price and apply the appropriate support services discount to support services list price • Contact BPSST for support and final price quotation before presenting to the client • List Price Examples • 18 Terabytes Usable Open Systems Storage Capacity • License List Price = $ 29,918 • Annual Support Services List Price = $6,582 • 147 Terabytes Usable Open Systems Storage Capacity • License List Price = $103,525 • Annual Support Services List Price = $22,775 Note: The URL provided on this slide is on a secure server.
