Guide to MLA Formatting in Word 2007 • Set up 1” margins • Use Times New Roman 12 font • Create a header and continuous numbering throughout your paper • Double space your essay • On the left hand side of the first page, put • Your name • Your teacher’s name • The course code • The date written: Day Month Year

  3. Guide to MLA Formatting in Word 2007 (continued) • The title of your essay should come next, centred. • The body of your essay should be double spaced, with the start of each paragraph indented one tab. • Long quotes (more than 3 lines) should be block indented • Your Works Cited should be the last page in your paper (make sure it is on a separate page)

  4. Step 1 - Margins In Page Layout, set your margins to Normal (1” top, bottom, sides)

  5. Step 2 – Font and Size From Home, select Times New Roman font, size 12

  6. Step 3 - Header From Insert, Click on Header, then select Edit Header.

  7. Step 3 (continued) Press tab, tab, then type in your name. Press the space bar after this.

  8. Step 3 (continued) From the Header and Footer Tools, select Page Number then Current Position, Plain Number

  9. Step 3 (continued) Press Close Header and Footer button or Double click in document to exit

  10. Step 4 - Spacing From Home, click on Line Spacing. Choose 2.0

  11. Step 5 – Format First Page In upper left corner, key in: Your Name, Your Teacher’s Name, Your Course Code Date in format: 24 Jan. 2011 Key in essay title, centred

  12. Step 6 – Essay Body Key in your essay text, indenting one tab at the start of each paragraph

  13. Step 6 (continued) Block indent long quotes

  14. Step 7 – Works Cited On a separate page at the end of your essay, key in your works cited. You can select the text and pull the bottom triangle across to form a Hanging Indention

  15. Step 7 (continued) • Be sure your Works Cited follows MLA 7 Guidelines: • Alphabetical order by author’s surname, or whatever comes first in citation • The part that comes first is what goes in the bracket in your embedded citation in the body of your essay!

  17. Where to go to get help: • Your Student Planner • Near the back, there is a page which shows you what you need to know to do a proper Works Cited • The guide is great for the examples shown EXCEPT it does not double space (even though they tell you to do so in the instructions)!

Practice... • On the library My Class page, • Go to “Homework” • Open the “Source It Right in MLA 7” folder • Open up the “MLA Exercise” • When finished, use your name for the file’s name and save your exercise under your teacher’s folder in the “I” drive: • Save As • Students • 4students – In • MLA Exercise – Your teacher’s name
