  1. Call of the Wild Middle – High School Research Project By: Sabrina Granger & Robin Zalone

  2. Introduction You are a new reporter covering a story on the not-so-tropical vacation. Your editor instructs you that your first assignment is to either write an article covering the Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race or a background story on the people, climate and culture of the Yukon Territory. To write a great story, you decide you first need to know the facts about this fascinating place. Click on the following page to learn more about your assignment.

  3. Goal =Finish Line • Click on the above picture to access and print out your dogsled. You can decorate it in anyway. (Maybe include a photo of yourself) • This sled will be used to show how far you are on your sledding Web Quest. • As you complete each task you will move your sled along the Race Paper on the back wall.

Goal =Finish Line • To be a winner in this race: • All tasks must be completed to the best of your ability. • You must use complete sentences. • All tasks must be finished by the posted deadline. • You must be a good sport and be supportive of your fellow racers. • You must receive full credit on the rubric provided. • You must have fun!!

  5. Your Task As a reporter, you must be informed about your topic in order to write a good article by following the steps on the next few slides. You will: • Research the Yukon, gathering information about the location, climate, history, gold rush, and the culture/people, or the Iditarod, dog sled race. • Write a report: • Explain how the author, Jack London, ties into all of this. Who is he? How do his books tie into the Yukon? • Include a map of the Yukon.

  6. Step 1: Once you have printed out your sled and decorated it, put it at the starting point on the Race Paper. • Make sure your name is on your sled. • This will be part of tracking your overall progress throughout the race.

  7. Step 2: Choose your assignment as a reporter: • You may choose from A or B. By clicking on the letters below, you will be taken directly to the slide. • The resources are provided on the assignment page you choose. OR

  10. Conclusion Congratulations on your first time reporting! Now that you are finished, you can take all of the information that you have learned about dog sledding and the Yukon with you to the final part of the unit. All of this information will help you to better understand the environment and how it affects the characters in the book we will be reading called Call of the Wild, by Jack London.
