  1. VAPOR-DEPOSITED COATING FOR ELECTRICAL CONTACTS SHEHDEH JODEH DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY AN-NAJAH NATIONAL UNIVERSITY NABLUS- PALESTINE

  2. OBJECTIVES • TO EXPLORE NEW COATING STRUCTURES AND COMPOSITION CREATED BY PVD FOR LOW FRICTION, GOOD WEAR RESISTANCE, LOW CONTACT RESISTANCE AND HIGH TEMPERATURE ELECTRICAL CONTACT APPLICATION

  3. INTRODUCTION • TODAY, THERE ARE ABOUT 1500 ELECTRICAL TERMINALS IN EACH AUTOMOBILE. • TO ENSURE RELIABLE ELECTRICAL CONTACTS, VARIOUS COATINGS ARE APPLIED TO THE CONNECTORS • MOST CONNECTORS USED IN AUTOMOBILES THESE DAYS ARE ELECTROPLATED WITH TIN(Sn). • AS THE UNDER HOOD SPACE BECOMES MORE COMPACT AND AN INCREASING NUMBER OF SENSORS ARE MOUNTED CLOSE TO THE ENGINE, THE COATINGS ARE REQUIERED TO FUNCTION AT 150 °C TO 200 °C IN THE UNDERHOOD ENVIRONMENT.

  4. BASIC IDEAS • FRICTION COEFFICIENT,μ, ACCORDING TO THE THEORIES FOR ADHESION FORCE AND THAT FOR JUNCTION GROWTH, IS GIVEN BY: • µ = τ/P0 • Τ= SHEAR STRENGTH,, P0= NORMAL STRENGTH

  5. EXPERIMENTAL • EVAPORATION MATERIALS ARE 99.999% PURE AG AND 99.99% NI. • SAMPLE CLEANED BY ACETONE, METHANOL, AND SPUTTERED WITH 100 Ev Ar+ with a beam current density of 1 mA/cm2. • EPMA, AES, SEM, and XRD.
