  2. Reading Program Part 1: Imagine It! Reading Program Whole Group Direct Instruction 8:45-9:45 (M-F) 1. phonemic awareness 2. phonics 3. fluency (decodable books, student readers) 4. comprehension 5. grammar, usage, and mechanics

Reading Block Part 2: Walk and Read Groups *Differentiated Instruction for Student Needs 9:50-10:50 (M-TH) • Students assessed to determine needs. • Reading Skill Groups: • Emergent Groups • Grade Level Groups • Enrichment Groups **Students may stay with homeroom teacher or change classes to another first grade classroom/teacher for W&R instruction.

  5. Imagine It! Website http://www.sraimagineit.com/g_login.html • We have this link on our websites but you need the username and password information for your child provided by your child’s teacher.

  6. Accelerated Reader • At some point in the year your child’s teacher may decide your child is ready to take Accelerated Reader (AR) tests to strengthen comprehension skills. • Books are color coded by level of difficulty. • Students may check out a book on their level from the media center, read it 2 times at home, and then take the test at school. • 60% or higher is passing on an AR test.

  9. Writer’s Snapshot • New district-wide system of progress monitoring for writing K-2 • Three times throughout the year we will be collecting samples for each student on each of the following modes of writing: opinion, informative/explanatory, and narrative. • Scoring based on a rubric

  10. Math Programs Go Math! • Scientific Research Based and designed for Florida Standards with emphasis on: • Problem solving • Explaining thought processes • Higher order thinking skills Touch Math • Tactile learning strategy for basic math facts. • Some classes use this program.

  11. Math Topics Taught: • Number sense • Patterns • Operations (addition and subtraction strategies) 4. Geometry 5. Measurement • Length *Money and time are not in Go Math!, but will be taught.

Minimum First Grade Expectations • Master all of 1st Grade SSS Benchmarks in all core content areas taught • Mastery = 70% proficiency on 70% of the benchmarks in each subject area • For Subject Area Benchmarks: Mrs. Johnson’s website-photos/documents tab • Attain a grade equivalent (GE) score 2.0 GE by year’s end on Success Maker 4. • Students are expected to meet expectations on the 3 Writers Snapshots.

  19. Behavior and Work Study Grades Behavior and work study codes: • E – Very consistent demonstration of rules and procedures. • S – Demonstrates characteristics of rules and procedures. • N- Inconsistent demonstration of rules and procedures.

  20. Behavior Goals & Expectations • Makes safe choices • Respects adults • Follows directions the first time • Gets along well with others • Pays attention in class • Has good lunchroom, hallway, and special area behavior • Raises hand to speak • Listens while others speak

  22. Weekly Progress Reports • Weekly grades for behavior/work study • E, S, N grades will be given • Reports sent home weekly in Friday Folders • Review, sign, and return to school the following Thursday with homework

  23. Homework • Reading Log: • 20 minutes of reading activities for 5 days each week-Please return this each Thurs! • Math Practice Pages: • Reinforce skills being taught in class • Spelling: • Tests will begin 2nd nine weeks • Other assignments may vary by teacher.

Volunteering in the ClassroomA few requests: • Schedule volunteering in advance. • Contact teacher if unable to attend. • Check in at the office for name tag. • Record your time in PTO volunteer log. • Work with your child’s teacher to arrange a procedure to follow when you arrive to volunteer (i.e. Where will projects be located, etc.)

  25. Volunteering in the ClassroomA few requests: • Confidentiality: When you volunteer with us you will come in contact with your child’s classmates. We ask that you keep things you observe about other children’s academic progress or behavior confidential. Feel free to discuss any concerns you have with your child’s teacher at the right time, but not with others. • Cell Phone Etiquette: • Turn phones to vibrate or silent. • Take phone calls outside of the classroom.
