In pairs ■ Where do most people live? ■ Who eats most of the planet’s food? ■ How does diet affect a person’s ability to work? ■ Who gets the best education? ■ How does education affect a person’s career prospects? ■ What sort of jobs do you think the Havalesses do? ■ Who lives longer? ■ Why do these people live longer? ■ What effect does life expectancy have on a person’s lifestyle and career opportunities? ■ Do you think the Gettimorans have been fair towards the Havalessees when loaning them money? Why is this? ■ Where would you prefer to live – Gettimora or Havalessa?

Poor diet leads to lack of energy, poor concentration, dizziness, nausea, faintness etc. ■ Who gets the best education? Gettimorans ■ How does education affect a person’s career prospects? Jobs are now information and skills based, few unskilled jobs with prospects are available, qualifications are deemed necessary for entry to employment ■ What sort of jobs do you think the Havalessees do? ■ Who lives longer? Gettimorans ■ Why do these people live longer? Better diet, healthcare, more resources leading to a better lifestyle ■ What effect does life expectancy have on a person’s lifestyle and career opportunities? Associated health problems, reduced income, ability to do the job etc. ■ Do you think the Gettimorans have been fair towards the Havalessees when loaning them money? Why is this? ■ Where would you prefer to live – Gettimora or Havalessa? In pairs

  6. Do you think these issue happen in the real world today? • The Info Sheet gives a simplified description of the global north/south divide on planet Earth. Iniquia represents planet Earth. What do Gettimora & Havalessa represent? • Gettimora represents the richer, developed communities (Gettimora could include Europe, North America, Australia and Japan) & • Havalessathe poorer, developing communities (Havalessa could include most of Asia and Africa and parts of South America).

North – South division People in developed communities: ■ form a quarter of the world’s population ■ have 80% of the world’s income and wealth ■ have an average life expectancy of 70 years or more ■ are generally well educated – most finish secondary education ■ eat about 70% of the world’s foodstuffs. Developed communities have 90% of the world’s manufacturing industry. They control most international economic systems, trade and finance through international corporations, the World Trade Organisation, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

On the contrary People in developing communities: ■ form three quarters of the world’s population ■ have 20% of the world’s income and wealth ■ have an average life expectancy of 50 years or less ■ are not generally well educated – about 50% of the people have little chance of a proper education ■ have about 30% of the global grain production with around 20% of the population suffering hunger or malnutrition. • ■ Developing communities have only 10% of the world’s manufacturing industries. They have little financial, trade or economic influence.

  9. Homework • Write a paragraph proposing ideas for making society more equal. • What do you think it can be done? • Do you think it is possible for a more equal society?
