  2. Audience in Hawaii Schools • 5th – 6th grade social studies students studying American history, government, civil rights & liberties

  3. SocialStudies Standards Students will understand & demonstrate principles & values underlying American constitutional democracy.

  4. Language Arts Standards Students will: - read literary & informational texts for a variety of purposes. - write using various forms to communicate for a variety of purposes & needs.

  5. Technology Standards • Students will use technology to enhance learning, increase productivity & promote creativity.

  6. Performance Objectives • Students will be able to discuss Executive Order 9066. • Who did it apply to? • What did it do? • Where did the people come from? Where were they taken? • When did this happen? • Why did this happen? • How can we apply this to our present lives?

  7. Lesson Introduction • Read executive order 9066 • Show pictures of people getting ready to board buses. • Introduce Journey to Topaz by Yoshiko Uchida

  8. Instruction • Students read Jouney to Topaz by Yoshiko Uchida. • Story is mapped according to characters and story events. • Corresponding actual historical events are juxtaposed with group discussions. • Personal family stories are shared.

  9. Follow Up • Study and identification of constitutional rights violated during WWII. • Discussion on what can be done to insure this never happens again.

  10. Lesson Assessment • Rubrics will be used to assess student understanding of Journey to Topaz, their ability of connect the story to actually events, and their ability to apply the information to their lives.
