  2. Tone • Shute’s attitude toward this novel is serious because he uses his life experiences and his personal knowledge to enhance his writing. • This novel was about war and romance and Shute took a lot of time to use his past experiences to make more realistic characters. • Nevilshute has a serious tone when dealing with war and romance and it showed in this book.

  3. Imagery • Imagery was present in “On The Beach” on many occasions because of the precise detail he put into his work. He was able to give such vivid detail because of his work as a military officer and aeronautical engineer. • Shute made it almost possible for the reader to imagine a life like image of what was occurring in the novel.

  4. Voice • The voice expressed in this novel is that war and love are often common things and that death is inevitable. Different love affairs take place throughout the novel and everyone on earth dies due to a nuclear fallout.

  5. Irony • The irony is that the characters in this novel lead conservative lives. They did not want to do much out of the ordinary or do anything that would be considered dangerous. However, once they received word about the nuclear fallout, they did exciting, dangerous things that they never would have done under normal circumstances.

  6. A Town Like Alice By: Nevil Shute

  7. Tone • Shute had more of an emotional attitude toward this book, both happy and sad. The Japanese death marches where women were killed were the depressing parts of the novel while the blossoming romances were happier parts of the book.

  8. Imagery • The main sections of the novel where imagery was used a number of times were during the scenes in the jungle. The detail used in describing the scenery makes the reader feel like they are in the jungle participating on the death march.

  9. Voice • The opinion expressed in this novel is that love is unexpected and can find you at any moment. Moira is a prisoner in a Japanese military camp. She takes part in a death march and is rescued by an American marine who she later maries.

  10. Irony • Irony is presented in this novel when Sgt. Briggs is contemplating leaving the military. He makes up his mind to leave but is talked out of it. Sgt. Briggs later is sent on a mission and rescues a group of women including Moira Jenkins who he later marries.
