Time line January 19 British translate telegram from Reich Foreign Secretary Zimmermann to Mexico, urging them to attack the United States April 16-29 French launch offensive attack at Chemin des dames at the cost ofmanycasualties, only to advance 500 yards March 15 Provisional Government is declared for Russia February 1st Germany declares unrestricted submarine war April 6 President Wilson asks Congress for a declaration of war with Imperial Germany

Time line April- June Half a million French soldiers commit mutiny or go on strike and refuse to continue the fail offensive July 1- 16 Russian army lead by Alexander Kerensky begins last and disastrous offensive in Galicia May 18 United States pass a Selective Service Act, empowering the Federal Government to draft men for the armed forces July 3 First wave of American Expeditionary Force lands in France

Time line • July 31 – November 10 • Battle of Passchendaele, • also known as 3rd battle of Ypres • minor gains with no breakthrough in the western front • cost of 700 000 casualties on both sides November 7 Bolshevik socialists led by Lenin overthrow Kerensky’s government October 23 American troops fire their first shot in trench warfare in France December 3 The new Russian government, represented by Leon Trotsky, signs armistice with Germany December 9 British capture Jerusalem from the Turks and her Arab allies

Battles: Passchendaele • The Battle of Passchendaele • Weather as a huge factor was not taken into account • Planes had to be in the air • Observer planes were necessary • Fighter planes to protect your Observer planes also had to be in the air • Not well thought out • Ineffective shells due to mud • Due to mud, troops couldn’t move forward
