District Approved IB Diploma CurriculumGraduation Requirements Class of 2019 and Beyond • English: 4 credits (Min. of 2 honors level or higher w/at least one IB or AP course) • Math: 4 credits (Alg. 1, Geometry, Alg. 2, and at least one IB or AP course) • Science: 4 credits (Biology and 3 add. w/at least one IB or AP lab science) • Social Studies: 3 credits (Min. of 2 honors level or higher w/at least one IB or AP course) • World Language: 2 credits (Paxon IB Prep/IB students will take 4 credits in the same language) • Theory of Knowledge: 1 credit • The Arts/Electives: 6 credits (This includes 1 IB 6th subject studied over 1 or 2 years)

District Approved IB Diploma CurriculumGraduation Requirements Class of 2019 and Beyond • Completion of Extended Essay • Completion of CAS requirement • Completion of all IB assessments (internal and external) • Passing score on the FSA: Grade 10 Reading • State required EOCs (Algebra, Geometry, Biology, US History-necessary for scholar designation) • Cumulative unweighted 2.0 GPA *Students not turning in IB requirements by the internal school deadline will have senior privileges suspended, pending reinstatement by school administration. This includes paid activities for which a refund may not be able to be granted.

  11. IB Diploma Students Are NOT Required to… • Take an online class • Take the following courses: • American Government • Economics • HOPE If at any point a student exits from the IB Program of Study, all of the above will need to be taken.

  12. Graduation Requirements MUST Be Met to Participate in Senior Activities Posted throughout the building (i.e. guidance, senior English classes, student services, bathrooms, etc.) No Exceptions!!!

ACT & SAT • ACT: • Register at www.ACT.org • Take ACT with Writing • Students can take practice tests and question of the day • Offered in September, October, December, February, April, and June • SAT: • Register atwww.collegeboard.com • Students can take practice tests and question of the day • Offered in October, November, December, January, March, May, and June *See your Counselor for waivers if you qualify* Don’t delay completing college applications because of test scores!!!

ACT or SAT Waiver Qualifications The student.... • Is enrolled in or eligible to receive free/reduced lunch • Family income falls within the Income Eligibility Guidelines set by the USDA (see counselor for chart) • Family receives public assistance • Lives in federally subsidized public housing, a foster home, or is homeless • Is a ward of the state or an orphan For SAT: Once 1st waiver is used, 2nd waiver will automatically apply to next test (should come up in SAT account). *See your Counselor for waivers if you qualify* Don’t delay completing college applications because of test scores!!!

Rumor has it... • If you don’t earn your IB diploma, you don’t graduate. • You must pass all of your IB exams in order to earn your IB diploma and/or graduate. • IB is not worth it (no benefits). • You are not smart enough (or have the right GPA) to do IB. • If you are in IB, you will not have a life. These rumors are all FALSE!!!

  18. Benefits of IB • Ability to study a variety of subjects and do research at the college level (not just one test=student friendly assessments) • Begins preparation for specific majors (ex. Medical field=IB Biology, IB Chemistry) • Stand out in the college admissions process. • Earn college credits and skip introductory classes.

Bright Futures Requirements Award Level – Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) • 100% Tuition & Fees • $300/per semester (fall & spring only) Educational Expense Stipend • Florida Academic Scholars - For students who will be graduating in 2019: • 3.5 B.F.* GPA, 1290 SAT or 29 ACT, 100 hours of community service. Other Ways To Qualify: • IB Diploma Recipient (with 100 hours of community service) • National Merit or Achievement Scholars or Finalists • National Hispanic Scholars

Bright Futures Requirements Award Level – Florida Medallion Scholars (FAS) • 75% Tuition & Fees • Florida Medallion Scholars - For students who will be graduating in 2019: • 3.0 B.F.* GPA, 1170 SAT or 26 ACT, 75 hours of community service Other Ways To Qualify: • IB Diploma Recipient (with 75 hours of community service) • National Merit or Achievement Scholars or Finalists • National Hispanic Scholars

Bright Futures Requirements The Bright Futures GPA is calculated based on the following: • The student’s best grades in each subject area will be used • 4 credits of English • 4 credits of Math • 3 credits of Science • 3 credits of Social Studies • 2 credits of Foreign Language • Students may use up to 2 additional credits from courses in the academic areas listed above as well as AP, IB or AICE fine arts courses to raise the GPA. • See bright futures website for more information - http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/ssfad/bf/ FFAA & FAFSA applications open Oct. 1st

CAS Documentation IB 11th and 12th grade students complete a Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) requirement which is documented online using the ManageBac website. https://psas.managebac.com/login CAS Completion Deadline: March 18, 2019 For more information on CAS, visit the ‘CAS’ page on the Paxon IB website.

CAS & Community Service for IB Students • Hours may be documented from the ‘service’ component of the IB Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) requirement for Bright Futures • Students cannot be paid for the ‘service’, and it must be performed at a non-profit agency. Be very careful with doing service at/through religious institutions – not every thing counts • Community Service (and CAS) should be meaningful. • To eliminate headaches later, ALWAYS check with Mrs. Culpepper

CAS & Community Service for IB Students For IB program of study students all service documentation is completed online via ManageBac as part of the student’s CAS program (remember…no hour counting with CAS). Additional community service forms only need to be turned in if: • Documenting hours to apply for a scholarship (ex. Bright Futures) The only form IB students need to turn in to document community service hours are: • Community Service Log Form • Forms are available on Paxon’s website: psas.duvalschools.orgunder the guidance tab and on the Paxon guidance website at paxonguidance.weebly.com

Requesting Letter of Recommendation • Complete the Paxon letter of Recommendation Information Form on the Paxon guidance website (summer assignment for seniors) • Be thorough and descriptive in your responses • Ask your counselor at least 2 weeks prior to when you need your completed letter. • If 2 weeks notice is not given, you may not be able to receive a completed letter

Transcript Requests • Information and forms for requesting transcripts are on our Paxon Guidance website • No appointment needed to do this (completed through guidance front desk) • Two different types of transcript requests: • In-state colleges/universities (sent electronically) • Out-of-state colleges/universities & scholarships (hard copy given to student...specify if it needs to be official vs. unofficial) • May request 5 hard copy official transcripts • Over 5: Will be given 1 transcript and student must bring copies back to be made official • Submit your transcript requests at least 2 weeks prior to when it is needed • If 2 weeks notice is not given, you may not be able to receive your transcript

College Planning • Be sure to visit colleges and universities BEFORE you make a final decision. • Colleges visit Paxon to speak to students (Lunch) • Schedule posted outside of the school counseling office, on the Paxon school counseling website, linked on school website, and said during announcements • Students must have teacher permission to miss class to attend if scheduled during a lunch when they have class or during class time (extremely rare).
