Purpose – Prevent or minimise Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) associated with Hazardous Manual Tasks • The issue was highlighted more than 20 years ago • HWSA “Safe Steps – Manual Handling Slips and Trips in Hospitals” Campaign 2008 identified manual handling issues in the handling of surgical loan sets across three industry sectors • National Working Party formed in 2009 with WorkCover NSW as convenor – agreed design of transport case and developed the National Guide
Legislation • Work Health and Safety legislation – now in force in NSW from 1 January 2012 • Work Health and Safety Act 2011 • Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 • Safe Work Australia Code of Practice – Hazardous Manual Tasks
Duties under Work Health and Safety legislation Work Health and Safety Act 2011 • Section 19 – Primary duty of care of person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) • Section 27 – Duties of officers • Section 28 – Duties of workers • Section 46 – Duty to consult with other duty holders • Sections 47 to 49 – Duty to consult workers Work Health and Regulation 2011 • Clauses 34 – 38 – General risk and workplace management • Clause 60 – Person conducting a business or undertaking must manage risks associated with a hazardous manual task

Training package • Funding provided by Federal Sterilising Research Advisory Council of Australia • Training developed by National CSSD Sub Group • To be customised for each State and Territory
