  2. Voluntary Agreement on Washing machines • Agreed between manufacturer / negotiated with EU Commission (DGXVII) • As alternative to Efficiency directive • Based on Energy Label and referred to base-case as defined in GEA reports • Enables market forces to reach agreed target

  3. Content of Voluntary Agreement on washing machines • Hard target • 20 % energy saving compared to base-case • elimination of models in classes D to G from market offer (exception class D for <600rpm or <=3kg) • Soft target • inform consumer on energy saving use of washing machines • co-ordinate with detergent industry (A.I.S.E.) • transfer energy saving technology to Washer-dryers

Achievements • 20% saving could be reached in 1999 by improving almost all models • proven by notary reporting system • comparison of production and model based database show only very small differences • balancing of performance and energy was maintained • soft targets were successfully followed

  15. Conclusions and Outlook 1. Maximum saving potential (25% as worked out by GEA study) is almost reached! 2. Optimisation has improved machine parameters relevant for all or most of the programs - the efficiency was improved! 3. Further and faster energy savings can be achieved by replacing old washing machines in the households by most efficient new ones.
