  3. BOOKS • Textbook: -The Language of Literature: World Literature (McDougal Littel) • -Vocabulary: For the High School Student (Levine, Levine, and Levine) • Outside Readings: • Picture Bride by Yoshiko Uchida. • The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare.

  4. SUPPLIES • 1 – Composition book for daily and periodic journaling (may need more than one as the year progresses) • 1 – Notebook / 3 ring binder with loose leaf paper for note taking and various storage • Multiple – Black and/or blue pens for note taking (Pencils may be used under special circumstance only, I will inform when) • 1 or more – Storage device(s) for keeping handout and things returned by me organized. Any adequate system you choose will do (Ask for suggestions if need be) • 1-Flash / Jump Drive. No larger than 4GB necessary.

  5. COURSE OVERVIEW • Literature and Composition I is a broad program focusing on using English as a vital tool for communication. Freshmen study many different forms of literature including non-fiction, fiction, poetry, and drama. Students will continue to develop an understanding of major themes and literary devices of literature while building further appreciation for these areas of emphasis.

  6. COURSE OBJECTIVES • Students will understand the historical background of major periods of World Literature. Students will recognize the importance and effects of literary devices. Students will become more proficient readers and writers. They will write in a variety of forms including journaling, reactions to literature, reflections, opinion essays, poems, and critical questioning from peers. Students will continue to develop public speaking skills during class discussions and other presentations.

  7. GRADING • Your grade each quarter will be determined as follows: • Quiz Average: 25% • Test Average: 25% • Homework Average: 25% • Participation/Classwork*: 25% • *This includes work done in class, group participation, behavior, preparedness for class, and being in dress code.

  8. HOMEWORK • Homework, which includes all reading and studying, is to be completed and turned in when it is to be collected. No late work will be accepted. • Final drafts are to be typed, double spaced using 12 point Times New Roman font and standard one inch margins. If there is more than one page to hand in, bring stapled. All written work must also be submitted electronically to www.turnitin.com with proper heading, to be discussed. • If you are traveling for a team sport and will miss a class, or if a home game requires that you to miss class, your work is due to me before you leave for the game. Or it needs to be E-mailed to me by 8:00AM of the day you will miss class.

  9. MAKE UP WORK • If you have an excused absence, work due the day of absence is due the first day you return to school. A big assignment (paper, project, etc.) should be E-mailed to me by 8:00AM the day the assignment is due. It is your responsibility to obtain and complete missed assignments because of excused absences.

  10. CLASS RULES • Be responsible and give your best effort • We do nice things just to be nice • Respect others and their property • You are only allowed to have what you need for class at your desk. All other belongings must be placed in designated locations in classroom.
