  9. Ok, so we assume you do want to do a graduate degree Q. Where should (can) I study? • The world is your oyster. As long as you select a university (college) that is VA recognised. • Check via Web Enabled Approval Management System (WEAMS)

  12. Q. What is course I want is not recognised? A. Contact the V.A. and they can usually assess, and if appropriate, register new courses fairly quickly…

How long will it take? • Average completion time in for a Ph.D. in Australia is 3.5 years • Average completion time in for a Ph.D. in United States is 7 years • One and two year Master programs Why so different? US institutions, as a rule, require a great deal of course work to prepare candidates. In the U.K. and Australia the candidate needs to prove previous research experience to apply.

  15. Q. What happens if I can’t finish in the standard time frame? • VA pays to the end of the term • STEM degrees – may be eligible for additional $30,000 or nine months of entitlement

  16. Q. How much will the V.A. cover and what other funding is available? • The G.I. Bill will cover – T&F, B&S, may provide monthly housing • Each branch of the US military offers some form of ‘Top Up’ funding • You can still apply for FAFSA funding • Each university will offer some form of scholarship. N.B. Outside the US most scholarships are often ‘Merit-Based’ not ‘Needs-Based’ • Don’t forget to ask about university level, faculty (school) level and even program level scholarships from the institution • Third party scholarships E.g. Fulbright, American Australian Association, Google and Raytheon SVA Scholarship Programs, etc.

  17. Can I work while I study? • Varies by country, but in Australia, you can work up to 20 hours per week over semester time and more during holidays (vacations). You may also be eligible for 2 years of work rights after you graduate. You don’t have to work on campus. You can work wherever you wish. • Pretty similar in Canada: “You may be eligible to work in Canada while studying and after you graduate. As a study permit holder, you may qualify to work on-campus or off-campus without an additional work permit if you meet specific criteria.” • In the U.K. the answer is often ‘yes’, but being the U.K. it is complicated…

  18. Can my spouse and family join me? • Again, wide variation depending on country. In Australia the answer is usually ‘yes’ and the spouse will often also have work rights. *In some states, for some degrees children of international students can study at government primary and high schools tuition free • In Canada in most cases, spouses can work, however, they will usually need a work permit to work. • In the U.K. the answer is often ‘yes’, but being the U.K. it is complicated…

  19. How many Vets undertake research degrees? • This is a tough one to answer…

  20. Pathways to Ph. D. Yes, just like before, there is a wide variation from country to country. • If you have a strong ‘Honours’ UG degree you can apply directly to a Ph. D. program in Australia, the UK and some other countries. • You can go through the Master degree pathway, but there should be a major research component to the degree • On rare occasions candidates with an established research profile can apply to Ph. D. programs based on the strength of that research
