  1. ACTIVE VOICE VERSUS PASSIVE VOICE: Improving your writing by knowing when to choose active or passive voice

  2. WHAT IS ACTIVE VOICE? In a sentence using active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action expressed in the verb. *Active Voice is usually preferred to passive because it makes writing more concise and direct; however, there are times when you will want to use passive voice instead. We will talk about these later.

  3. EXAMPLES OF ACTIVE VOICE The small child fell down the stairs. The morning sunshine brightened the room. The cheers of the fans echoed throughout the gymnasium. The Fall air invigorated me. The auditorium seat sat empty.

  4. EXAMPLES OF PASSIVE VOICE 1. The video game was played by the student. 2. The letter was opened by Kendra. 3. The music was played by the band. 4. The homework was assigned by the teacher. 5. The meal was served by the waitress.

  5. HOW DO I IDENTIFY PASSIVE VOICE? In passive voice, the subject will not complete the action, AND a form of the “be “ verb will be present. 1. The missing dog was found by the owner. 2. The thirsty traveler was given a drink to enjoy. 3. The trumpeter was asked to play a solo by the band director. 4. The baby was given a bottle. 5. The news flash was aired. 6. The ball was thrown. 7. The mountain was far away. 9. He was congratulated. 10. He was moved ahead to the next grade without understanding active and passive voice.

  6. REAL-WORLD SENTENCES CONTAININGPASSIVE VOICE Recreating a memory is a challenging exercise that requires you to exercise your mind. When I teach active and passive voice, I am aware that some of my students are confused. Joining an extra-curricular activity is one way for students to meet people their own age. The weak economy is caused by high unemployment rates. The most profitable time of the year for retailers is the holiday season. The Pitt Panther’s opening game was played against Buffalo. Although they loved their home, living along a fault line was something they were unwilling to do. Funding for education has been reduced by the government. Evidence is scarce that expensive technology is improving educational outcomes. I am going to host next year’s labor day picnic at my house.

  7. WHEN TO USE ACTIVE VOICE AND WHEN TO USE PASSIVE VOICE • Use Active Voice In most cases you will want to use passive voice. • PASSIVE VOICE Use passive voice when the doer is irrelevant or unknown. • Smoking is prohibited. • Barack Obama was elected president. • Violators will be towed.
