  1. Maths – Week 3 Term 4 Applying knowledge to real life Problems We have been learning a number of strategies in Maths this year, but the key to being successful in Maths is being able to apply them to word problems.

  2. WALT: Apply our knowledge of strategies and numbers to real context problems.

Key points: Read the question and pull out any significant information Work out what ‘maths’ is required SHOW your working Go back and read the question to ensure you have the correct answer and unit, if relevant. ESTIMATE – if you are working with decimals remember to make a guess first, which will help you at the end

  4. At the end of each maths session we will discuss what knowledge and strategies we have needed to use, to be successful. You will need to make a reflective statement about this and decide if you need more practice, to be successful with similar problems.

  5. 174 boxes of nectarines must be delivered to 6 shops. Each shop will receive the same number of boxes. How many boxes will this be? 203 crates of carrots must be shared evenly between 7 trucks. How many crates will be on each truck? Write 3 similar problems and share with your partner – identify what maths you needed to know to solve the problems and yours must have the same base. 672 ÷ 4 = 549 ÷ 5 = 371 ÷ 6 =

  6. Philippa had a negative bank balance. She deposits $52.50 and is pleased to find she now has a balance of $18.20. What was her balance before the deposit? The coldest temperature recorded in a small town was -23.4 degrees. The hottest was +34.2. What is the difference between these two temperatures? Write 3 similar problems and share with your partner – identify what maths you needed to know to solve the problems and yours must have the same base.

  7. Challenge A student at St. F. X. decided to become his own employer by using his car as a taxi for the summer. It costs the student $693.00 to insure his car for the 4 months of summer. He spends $452.00 per month on gas. If he lives at home and has no other expenses for the 4 months of summer and charges an average of $7.00 per fare, how many fares will he have to get to be able to pay his tuition of $3280.00?

  8. Sharing Pizzas At the school fair, five children buy eight pizzas. They agree to take home equal shares. How much will each child take home? Three students have to write a make up test. Mark scored 24/60 on his first test and 32/40 on his make up test. Jake scored 35/70 on his first test and 54/60 on his makeup test. Marilyn scored 27/90 on her first test and 45/50 on her second test.A) Which student improved the most and by what percentage?

  9. Silver's Cleaners decided to raise the price of dry cleaning a sports coat from $4.00 to $5.00. The same percentage increase was applied to dry cleaning a jacket. The old cost of dry cleaning a jacket was $10.00. What is the new cost of dry cleaning a jacket? Matthew is at a zoo. He takes a picture of a one-metre snake beside a brick wall. When he developed his pictures, the one-metre snake is 2cm long and the wall is 4.5cm high. What was the actual height of the brick wall in cm.

  10. A 800 seat multiplex is divided into 3 theatres. There are 270 seats in Theatre 1, and there are 150 more seats in Theatre 2 than in Theatre 3. How many seats are in Theatre 2? Four friends buy a pizza that costs $20.00. Each person contributes a the following amount of money    Jane  $5.00         Mike   8.00         Mary   3.00         Joe    4.00Each person will eat an amount of pizza proportional to the amount of money they paid. 1)Draw a circle graph that represents the amount each eat. 2)Draw the circle graph if Mike only eats half of his pizza and gives half of what he has left to Mary.

  11. You need to complete this task on a piece of good A4 paper – Set up the heading, including your name and date. • Stained Glass Windows • 1. Design a stained glass window to fit a 1-square-metre frame. • 2. After you have designed your window, divide a piece of paper into three • sections, Number, Geometry, and Measurement, and describe your design, • using numbers, symbols, and mathematical language. For example: • under Number, calculate the fraction that each shape is of the whole • under Geometry, comment on transformations in your design • under Measurement, calculate the areas of coloured glass needed for your design and the perimeter of the shape
