  3. Early Tools • One of the most popular types of stone was flint • Were used to make cutting and grinding tools • Were also fastened to handles to make spears, arrows and other tools

  4. Scythe • Hand tool for reaping crops • Helped early civilizations grow food

  5. The Wheel • Believed to have been invented by the Sumerians • Used to help with transportation and later to help make pottery

  6. Egyptian tools These objects were made in Egypt to help them obtain food Fishhook Arrow Harpoon

  7. Discussion • Which was more important, the scythe or the wheel? Why? • Why was it so important for the Egyptians to have the tools that we mentioned today? • What had a greater impact on wars, the arrow or the wheel? Why?

  8. Agricultural Advances • Domestication-the taming of wild plants and animals • Propagation-reproducing plants • Irrigation-supplying water to crops to help them grow • Intercropping-farmers would plant a small crop between larger crops to use all the land

  9. The Printing Press • Johannes Guttenberg developed printing methods to print the Bible • Literacy spread(ability to read) Governments could spread information to support their ideas • Before this time all books were copied by hand.

  10. Johannes Guttenburg • German inventor • Movabletype-used metal letters and oil-based ink to spell out text. Many pages of text could be printed rapidly. • In 1455 printed the first Bible • The printing press allowed the ideas of the Renaissance to spread quickly all over Europe and beyond.

Renaissance Scientists • Copernicus determined that the planets were in orbit around the sun • Brahe- used instruments and observation to describe the solar system and 770 stars • Kepler-brought astronomical knowledge to a higher level • Galileo-the first to use the telescope for astronomy. He discovered the moons of Jupiter

Medicine • Widely studied during the Renaissance • The Catholic Church would not let people study anatomy by dissecting the dead. • Da Vinci ignored the rules of the church and studied human structure through dissection. • As art and science, his works were some of the most important of the Renaissance.
