  1. Strategy Demonstration #1UNE EDU-742 Peter & the Wolf Brian Battles

  2. We will read Two different story books and then compare and contrast This book will be read by an accompanying CD recording which also sets music to the story This book will be read by Mr. Battles and will not have any music in the background

  3. Peter and the wolf is a musical fairy tale in which each character is represented by a different instrument of the orchestra.

  4. Grandfather by the bassoon • How does the bassoon sound similar to Grandfather’s voice? Does the bassoon’s sound match grandfather’s personality?

  5. Peter by the Violins • Does the music played by the violins and strings sound “happy” or “sad”? • Would you describe Peter as a “happy” or “sad” boy?

  6. The little bird by the Flute How does a flute sound similar to a bird? Notice that when the bird fly’s away during the story, the pitch of the flute rises yet when he fly’s down to talk with Peter the pitch gets lower.

  7. The duck by the oboe • Does the sound of the oboe remind you of the quacking of the duck? If so, why? • Describe the music the oboe plays while being chased by the wolf, how does it make you feel?

  8. The cat by the clarinet • Does the sound of the clarinet remind you of the behavior of the cat during the story? • Listen to how the clarinet sounds when the cat is sneaking through the grass trying to capture his “breakfast”.

  9. The wolf by the French horn • Do the sounds of the French horn remind you of danger? • At what point of the story do we first hear the French horn and which character is in danger?

  10. The hunters and their gunshots by the kettle drum and the big bass drum • Why do the kettle drums represent gunshots so well? • When do we first become aware that the hunters are also trying to catch the wolf?

  11. Which version did you like better? Why? Read by CD Read by Mr. Battles

  12. Check out this cartoon from the 1946 Disney version of Peter and the Wolf. Listen carefully to the music being played while each character is talking! How are the books we read similar to the cartoon? How are they different? Let’s compare & contrast!!! • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zr25umYkxe4

  13. Your Turn!!! • Now it is time for you to create your own dramatic re-enactment of the story! • We will do an in class play 2 or 3 times so that each student gets the opportunity to portray one of the characters of the story. • We will use the CD accompaniment of the first book we read as our “script” but you may also make up your own lines so long as they reflect the story. • Let’s now break into small groups and discuss/brainstorm ideas. We will meet as a class again in 10 minutes to share our groups ideas for our performances.
