  10. Financial DevelopmentIt’s in the Bank! Upward Bound actually puts money in your pocket. It also helps keep some of that money with you. In the long term, Upward Bound teaches you how to spend wisely before and during college in order to make and save more money in life.

  11. Stipends You will receive monthly stipends for your participation in Upward Bound at Saturday tutorial sessions. This stipend is to cover food and supply costs during the time spent participating. It is not meant to be the incentive to join, but can provide for basic snacks or school materials useful on a typical Saturday. You will also receive a small payment (per diem) to cover food expenses on field trips.

  12. Fee Waivers/Reduced Expenses Preparing for college can be expensive. All the application fees, tests enrollment fees, and housing expenses can really add up. Upward Bound counselors provide students with fee waivers for test taking and college applications. Costs for summer housing or tuition can also be reduced if you are a member of Upward Bound.

  13. Financial Counseling All students preparing for and entering college need advice on how to manage money, apply for and obtain scholarships, grants, and loans, and how to maximize our savings and minimize our debt. Besides offering supplemental stipends, Upward Bound counselors and guest speakers will guide you through the budgeting and financial aid process, so you are ready to make and save money when you finish college.

  14. Physical DevelopmentActive Body, Active Mind

  15. Getting Fit Students have many opportunities during the summer to participate in physical activities and competitions. Students who work hard may go on to represent USF at the Summer Olympics.

  16. Student Athletes Student athletes are encouraged to participate in Upward Bound. A dedication in and off the field is important to setting and reaching goals. We can work around your sports commitments in order to keep you on academic track.

  17. Gymnasium and Dance Activities During the summer, students may use the USF recreational center. Residential counselors also lead activities such as cheerleading, dance, step and other activities. Students can show off their physical abilities at the Talent Show held in the summer.

  18. Professional DevelopmentA Cycle for Change

  19. Career Assessment and Counseling Choosing what you want to do and how to go about getting there can be challenging. Your academic advisors are up for this challenge. You will be able to explore careers and meet new people who are professionals in their field. Counselors will provide you the resources to find your own career path. Getting started early is key, and with Upward Bound, you will be on your way.

  20. Career Day Upward Bound works closely with College Reach-Out Program to feature professionals in careers ranging from nursing to banking, from managing restaurants to piloting planes. These career presentations are enjoyed by the students because they see role models they can relate to and they are inspired to follow in the footsteps of these great community leaders.

  21. Mentoring Upward Bound is implementing a mentoring program in which students pair with college students who are majoring in their chosen field. These high school students not only get the college experience, but mentors provide a bridge between their present academic experiences and the goals they someday hope to achieve by finishing college and becoming role models themselves.
