  3. What is going on??? steps: Trade abroad (territory discovery, new resources, etc.) Free trade (Great Britain, XIX) Colony division Informational Communications (Telegraph – internet)

  5. Urbanization • 3.3 billion people live in cities. • 60% will live in cities by 2030. • Almost 180,000 people move into cities each day. • 60 million people move into cities each year in developing countries. • Over the next 15 to 20 years, many cities in Africa and Asia will double in size.

  6. By 2015, therewillbe 23 citieswith a populationover 10 million, 19 ofwhichwillbeindevelopingcountries.

  7. Topical problems: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil • Lack of housing • Lack of infrastructure services • Lack of property rights • Enviromental (air,water, sound…pollution) • Social (religion, traditions, unemployment, traffic increasing • huge number of accidents)

  8. Megacities as a result Cities are growing as people move from the countryside in search of better jobs and living conditions. Economic characteristics • World-wide influencing corporate headquarters ofmultinational corporations, international financial institutions, law firms, conglomerants, and stock exchange • Significant financial capacity/output: city/regional GDP • Stock market indices/market capitalisation • Financial service provision; e.g., banks, accountancy • Cost of living personal wealth; e.g., number of billionaires

  9. What to do? • Infrastructure development (both in the city and in the village) • Green-certification • Economical living • Strengthen urban governance • Transform slums into legitimate communities…
