  1. Welcome to Today's Study THE TRINITY Stated and Defended WEEK FOUR Applied-Apologetics

  2. REVIEW FROM WEEKs 1-3 Applied-Apologetics

  3. What We Have Learned • The What and the Who of God • God is one WHAT or BEING • God is three WHO’S or Persons • The BEING of God is PERSONAL • Intellect, Emotion and Will • The WHO of God is Tri-personal • He is Three Persons • Father, Son and Holy Spirit • All three Persons are FULLY GOD • All the Persons are Co-Equal and Co-Eternal Applied-Apologetics

  4. What Have We Learned • The Father is NOT the Son or Spirit • The Son is NOT the Father of Spirit • The Spirit is not the Father or the Son • All three Persons are 100% God • The Eternal nv of John 1 • Jesus has eternally existed by the side of the Father and Spirit in “intimate personal relationship” • All of the OT sightings of God were the pre-incarnate Son of God Applied-Apologetics

  5. So what have we learned about the Logos thus far? • He is eternal (ἦν) • He was in the beginning (arche) • He is a person and the subject of the Prologue (ho logos) • He was in relationship with the Father (pros) • He is very God of very God (and the Word was God) Applied-Apologetics

  6. Who Did Isaiah See? • In Isaiah 6:1, the Prophet tells us that he saw YHWH and His glory. • In John 12:41, John tells us that Isaiah saw Jesus Christ, YHWH, the Second Member of the Trinity… Applied-Apologetics

  7. Philippians 2:6-11 • Philippians 2:2-11 is known as the “Carmen Christi” • Meaning; “A HYMN TO CHRIST AS TO GOD” • It is an ancient hymn that Paul used, as inspired by the Spirit, in the text of his Epistle Applied-Apologetics

  8. Philippians 2:6-11 • 2:6 who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave,by looking like other men,and by sharing in human nature.8 He humbled himself, by becoming obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross! 9 As a result God exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name,10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow – in heaven and on earth and under the earth – 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. (NET Bible) Applied-Apologetics

  9. Philippians 2:6 • 2:6 who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped Applied-Apologetics

  10. Philippians 2:6 • 2:6 “who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equalitywith God as something to be grasped” • First, notice that Jesus “existed” prior to His incarnation • The eternalSon of God, was with the Father before all worlds • This is speaking about the pre-incarnate Jesus Applied-Apologetics

  11. Philippians 2:6 • 2:6 who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped • Next, not only did Jesus “exist” • But, He “existed” in the “form of God” • Or shall we say, the “morphe” of God Applied-Apologetics

  12. Philippians 2:6 • 2:6 who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equalitywith God as something to be grasped • μορφή, form, outward appearance, shape • Arndt, William ; Danker, Frederick W. ; Bauer, Walter: A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature. 3rd ed. Chicago : University of Chicago Press, 2000, S. 659 Applied-Apologetics

  13. Philippians 2:6 • 2:6 who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equalitywith God as something to be grasped • μορφή, form, outward appearance, shape • Notice the text states that Jesus is the “form” of Theos… • This a point you must keep in mind • her Early Christian Literature. 3rd ed. Chicago : University of Chicago Press, 2000, S. 659 Applied-Apologetics

  14. Philippians 2:6 • 2:6 who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equalitywith God as something to be grasped • μορφή • “The Greek term translated form indicates a correspondence with reality. Thus the meaning of this phrase is that Christ was truly God.” (The NET BIBLE) Applied-Apologetics

  15. Philippians 2:6 – “FORM” • “Prior to the incarnation, Christ was in the form of God (Gk. morphē theou)…“Form” here means the true and exact nature of something, possessing all the characteristics and qualities of something. Therefore having the “form of God” is roughly equivalent to having equality with God (Gk. isa theō), and it is directly contrasted with having the “form of a servant” (Phil. 2:7). The Son of God is and always has been God. “Form” could also be a reference to Christ being the ultimate image of God, “the exact imprint of his nature” (Heb. 1:3)…” Applied-Apologetics

  16. A QUESTION FROM LAST WEEK • “Remarkably, Christ did not imagine that having “equality with God” (which he already possessed) should lead him to hold onto his privileges at all costs. It was not something to be grasped, to be kept and exploited for his own benefit or advantage. Instead, he had a mind-set of service. “Christ did not please himself” (Rom. 15:3). In humility, he counted the interests of others as more significant than his own (Phil. 2:3–4).” (ESV Study Bible) Applied-Apologetics

  17. A QUESTION FROM LAST WEEK • The “equality” being spoken about is an equality that the Eternal “LOGOS” had with the Father from all eternity. • “not something to be grasped” – Jesus forfeited His equality with God to become incarnate • He entered into human flesh to redeem a people for Himself • He did not “hold on to” His equality Applied-Apologetics

  18. Philippians 2:6 • 2:6 who though he existed in theformof God did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped Applied-Apologetics

  19. Philippians 2:6 • 2:6 who though he existed in theformof God did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped • ἴσος:to being equivalent in number, size, quality, equal Applied-Apologetics

  20. Philippians 2:6 • 2:6 who though he existed in theformof God did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped • ἴσος: to being equivalent in number, size, quality, equal • Jesus is “equal” to God… • But He did not count equality something to be held onto Applied-Apologetics

  21. Philippians 2:6 Summary • 2:6 who though he existed in theformof God did not regard equalitywith God as something to be grasped • Jesus “existed” prior to the incarnation Applied-Apologetics

  22. Philippians 2:6 Summary • 2:6 who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equalitywith God as something to be grasped • Jesus “existed” prior to the incarnation • And He existed “in the form of God” Applied-Apologetics

  23. Philippians 2:6 Summary • 2:6 who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped • Jesus “existed” prior to the incarnation • And He existed “in the form of God” • Hence, He was “equal” with God Applied-Apologetics

  24. Philippians 2:7 • “but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave,by looking like other men,and by sharing in human nature.” Applied-Apologetics

  25. Philippians 2:7 • “but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave,by looking like other men,and by sharing in human nature.” • κενόω; • ① to make empty, to empty • ⓑ of divestiture of position or prestige: of Christ, who gave up the appearance of his divinity and took on the form of a slave, he emptied himself, divested himself of his prestige or privileges Phil 2:7 Applied-Apologetics

  26. Philippians 2:7 • “but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave,by looking like other men,and by sharing in human nature.” • The “form” of a slave (v. 7) • The “form” of God (v. 6) • The “morphe” of both God and man Applied-Apologetics

  27. Philippians 2:7 • “but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave,by looking like other men,and by sharing in human nature.” (NET BIBLE) • Was Jesus Truly A Man? • Yes…He Was The Morphe Of Man • HENCE, If He Is One, He Is Both • If He Is Truly Man…He Is Truly God Applied-Apologetics

  28. Philippians 2:7 • “but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave,by looking like other men,and by sharing in human nature.” (NET BIBLE) • Please Note: Verse 7 is speaking about the “incarnation” of the Eternal Logos • While verse 6 is speaking about the “pre-incarnate” Logos Applied-Apologetics

  29. Philippians 2:7 • Also notice the pronouns and verbs in verses 6-7 • “who, although Heexisted in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men” (NASB) • It is Jesus doing the work in these verses Applied-Apologetics

  30. Philippians 2:8 • “Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Applied-Apologetics

  31. Philippians 2:8 • “Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” • It was Jesus who humbled Himself after being made in the form of man • Again, we see the incarnation of the Eternal Son Applied-Apologetics

  32. Philippians 2:9 • “For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name” Applied-Apologetics

  33. Philippians 2:9 • “For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name” • What we see here is the Logos, who has existed as the eternal second person of the Trinity, being exalted back to the position He left to become man… Applied-Apologetics

  34. Philippians 2:9 • “For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name” • And, because of Jesus’ entering into human form and His death on the cross, He is once again, exalted back to His previous position at the right hand of the Father… Applied-Apologetics

  35. Philippians 2:9 • “For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name” • Except now, it is the “God-Man” in the position of glory. • As a result, Jesus is given that name above ALL NAMES • Jesus Christ is the highest name in existence Applied-Apologetics

  36. Philippians 2:10-11 • “so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Applied-Apologetics

  37. Philippians 2:10-11 • “so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” • “By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in j righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance.’” (Isa. 45:23) Applied-Apologetics

  38. Philippians 2:10-11 Why is the Father glorified at the profession of “Jesus Christ is Lord”? Applied-Apologetics

  39. Philippians 2:10-11 Why is the Father glorified at the profession of “Jesus Christ is Lord”? 1) Because of INTER-TRINITARIAN union “Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” (John 17:5) Applied-Apologetics

  40. Philippians 2:10-11 Why is the Father glorified at the profession of “Jesus Christ is Lord”? 1) Because of INTER-TRINITARIAN union 2) Because to profess that Jesus Christ is Lord is to profess that Jesus Christ is YHWH “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” (John 8:58) Applied-Apologetics

  41. Philippians 2:10-11 Why is the Father glorified at the profession of “Jesus Christ is Lord”? 1) Because of INTER-TRINITARIAN union 2) Because to profess that Jesus Christ is Lord is to profess that Jesus Christ is YHWH 3) Hence, it is the profession of the Triune God 4) YHWH, the one true BEING of God Applied-Apologetics

  42. Hebrews 1:3 • “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.” (ESV) Applied-Apologetics

  43. Hebrews 1:3 • “He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.” (NRSV) Applied-Apologetics

  44. Hebrews 1:3 • He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high • χαρακτὴρτῆςὑποστάσεωςαὐτοῦ Applied-Apologetics

  45. Hebrews 1:3 • Χαρακτήρ • ① a mark or impression placed on an object • ②someth. produced as a representation, reproduction, representation, fig., of God • Christ is χαρ. τῆς ὑποστάσεως αὐτοῦ an exact representation of (God’s) real being Hb 1:3 (ὑπόστασις 1a). • NOT A VERB Applied-Apologetics

  46. Hebrews 1:3 • ὑπόστασις • ① the essential or basic structure/nature of an entity , substantial nature, essence, actual being reality (underlying structure, oft. in contrast to what merely seems to be… • ⓐ of the Son of God as χαρακτὴρτῆςὑποστάσεωςαὐτοῦa(n) exact representation of (God’s) real being ( i.e . as one who is in charge of the universe) Hb 1:3 . Applied-Apologetics

  47. ON 1:3 The greatness of the Son is further exhibited. Glory is often viewed metaphorically as light (e.g., Isa. 60:1, 19; 2 Cor. 4:4–6; Rev. 21:23), and here the Son is that glorious light of God. Jesus is the full and definitive representation, the exact imprint (Gk. charaktēr), of God’s real being (his nature, Gk. hypostasis). Thus the Son is identical in substance to God, being himself fully God. In all attributes and abilities, the Son is exactly like the Father. The Son, who created the universe (Heb. 1:2), upholds it by his own powerful word (cf. Col. 1:17). Jesus deals with the human need of purification for sins (see Heb. 9:11–10:18). Jesus ascends to the place of supreme authority (the right hand of God); see 1:13; 8:1; 10:12; 12:2; also e.g., Mark 14:62; Acts 2:33; Rom. 8:34; Eph. 1:20; 1 Pet. 3:22. The fact that he has sat down there indicates that his work of salvation had been completed. Majesty also describes God in Heb. 8:1 (cf. Deut. 32:3; Ps. 145:3, 6; 150:2; Jude 25).
