  2. Kurdish/Turkish Conflict • Southeastern Turkey • Kurds vs. Turks • Kurds demanded separation from Turkey; autonomy for Kurdistan; arms of former Iraqi soldiers fighting against the United States fell into the hands of Kurds. Over 100,000 casualties since 1984.

  3. Lord’s Resistance Army Insurgency • South Sudan, Dem. Republic of the Congo • Joseph Kony, spokesperson of God vs. Ugandan government • Kony attempts to overthrow Ugandan gov’t and establish a theocratic state based on the 10 Commandments • LRA accused of human rights violations including mutilation, torture, slavery, rape, abduction of 20,000 children-became child soldiers

Insurgency in Kashmir • India, Pakistan (Kashmir-Muslim territory in India) • Began officially in 1987 opposing elections of Indian government and rule of Kashmir; tried to assassinate Pakistani President, Musharaaf in 2004; fighting for political rights and opposing legitimacy of Indian rule in Kashmir; 68,000 casualties

  5. “Arab Spring” • A revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protests occurring in the Arab world. The demonstrations include strikes against oppression and the restriction of free speech through the use of social media. Causes-dictatorships, human rights violations and government corruption.

Arab Spring Conflicts • Bahrain-protestors participate in civil resistance, fighting for greater political freedom for people; equality for Shiites; end rule of King Hamad; government has used systematic torture against captured protestors. 40 casualties • Sinai Peninsula/Egyptian Revolution-following overthrow of President Mubarak in 2011, Islamic radicals seized opportunity to attack police, launch attacks against neighbor (Israel); complete state of anarchy • Libyan Faction Fighting-declaration of liberation in 2011; militias-guardians of revolution form own governing bodies; Benghazi (U.S. consulate attacked by militia, killing U.S. Ambassador to Libya-Sept. 11 2012) What really happened still being disputed; 700 casualties • Syrian Civil War-attempted ousting Bashar al-Assad by armed terrorist groups; 28,000 people missing; 1.2 million Syrians displaced; many have become refugees; 50,000 casualties • Yemen Revolution-12% of population-Shiite (including leader Pres. Assad)/75% of population-Sunni; protesting unemployment; attempted overthrow of gov’t; 2,000 casualties • Lebanon Revolution-Islamic protestors spilling over from Syrian protesting violation of rights; 90 casualties • Tunisian Revolution-anti-government protests against inflation, gov’t corruption, unemployment; demonstrations to oust President Ben Ali; goal of democratization; 338 casualties
