The Spread of Montessori Education • Rapid success of the Casa – many more quickly opened around Europe • Within 5 years, Montessori schools and societies were opened up all over the world • The Montessori Method became a best seller • By 1913, more than 100 Montessori schools in the US • John Dewey & William Heard Kilpatrick opposed

Comparing Montessori to Different Ways of Knowing • Both focus on learn by doing – hands on activities • Individualized structure – learn what interests you – but also focus on collaboration – peer teaching • Classroom as a laboratory • Parents play an important role in education • Technology – controversy in Montessori classrooms to use or not but key to Different Ways of Knowing
