  2. What’s the Problem? • Natural disasters happen all over the world, regardless of location • Rising number of natural disasters • Millions of people injured or killed

  3. How is it Affecting the World? • Loss of life plus injury of millions • Buildings and natural habitats destroyed • Setback in development • Hurts economy

  4. What is Being Done? • Organizations… • Provide relief aid • Give counseling for victims • Raise awareness • Study and develop new technology

  5. The 2008 Sichuan Earthquake • In center of North-South earthquake belt • Sichuan resides on 2 major crustal plates • Frequent earthquakes occur in Sichuan • In 2008, immense earthquake struck • > 69,000 people died • 7,000 schoolrooms destroyed

  7. Our Specific Topic “Quality and up-to-date earthquake preparation education for elementary to middle school kids in rural Sichuan public schools.”

  8. Why Did We Choose This? • Prevent death & serious injury of innocent kids • Helps students be prepared • Not many organizations already addressing this issue

  10. Earthquake Education Services • Teaches students about earth sciences • Belongs to University of Utah Seismograph Stations and College of Mines and Earth Sciences

  11. What is EES Doing? • Teaching K-12 students about the perils of natural disasters (earthquakes) • Incorporates into curriculum • Partners with teachers

  24. UNESCO Natural Disaster Reduction • United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization program • Study/try to mitigate many types of natural disasters, ex. earthquakes • Describes how to help prevent/respond to them efficiently afterwards

  25. China Earthquake Aid • Non-profit organization • Works to provide aid to victims of Sichuan earthquake • You can… • Donate money • Help raise awareness • Participate in their projects by writing letters to children impacted by disaster

  27. World Vision • Christian humanitarian organization focused on those in need around the world • Have long-term project planned for rural communities • Help rebuild schools/homes/health clinics to allow citizens' lives continue normally

  28. Why is This Important? • Millions of innocent people die every year from earthquakes • Many are children like us • No one deserves the immense feeling of grief and loss that follows these calamities • Huge setbacks for economic development

  29. Why Should Others Help? • Spread awareness! • More awareness = better chance of survival • Not an easy task; we can't do it alone • Many other aspects of natural disasters that you can help out with

  30. Think About It… • Kids in rural Sichuan just like us, but without resources we have • Share inform-ation, save a life • Arm them with knowledge
