What is expected of AA Staff? • Act in a professional manner at all times • Respect co-workers, residents, Angels, customers • Never create an environment that could be considered hostile
What is Harassment? • Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination in the workplace because of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex. Over time other protected characteristics like age and disability have been added.
Types of Harassment • Hostile Work Environment-ongoing, pervasive, or severe behavior that unreasonably interferes with an individual’s work performance, or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment (most common form of sexual harassment) • Quid Pro Quo: this for that, exchanging job benefits for sexual favors or threatening to deny job benefits if sexual favors aren’t given. (generally involves a supervisor, someone with power)
Examples of Hostile Work Environment • Making negative or lewd comments, about a person’s appearance on a regular basis • Making continual comments to degrade or devalue someone • Asking someone out regularly when they continue to say no
Who is the Victim? • Person who is targeted • Third party who is not the intended recipient of the behavior, but overhears or witnesses it and finds it offensive
Examples of third party victims • A Resident or Angel standing in the hallway overhears several other people who are walking by making a joke about a specific ethnicity • A Resident or Angel is attending an entertainment event and overhears employees making lewd comments about the physical attributes of the performers
Who can be a Harasser? • Supervisor/Manager • Co-worker • Vendor/Supplier/Contractor • Visitor • Customer • Resident • Volunteer
Example when an Angel or Resident could be a Harasser or contribute to harassing behavior • A Resident or Angel consistently tells an employee that they are not good at their job, not qualified to do their job and shouldn’t be here • The Resident or Angel talks to other Residents or Angels or staff about it
What can you do? • Don’t be a part of it! • Tell the person/s to stop the behavior! (studies show that most people stop when told to) • Tell someone on the Management Team • Use the proper channels of authority if there is an issue with an employee. Ask others to do so as well.
What can you expect from AA if you report harassment? • Investigation to find out exactly what happened • HR will talk to all witnesses • Appropriate action will be taken
Summary • Residents and Angels can help create a nice work environment • If you witness behavior that is inappropriate, tell the person to stop • If you witness behavior that is inappropriate, tell someone on the Management Team
