Weight Management Concepts • Basal Metabolic Rate: energy needed to fuel the body’s ongoing processes while the body is at complete rest. • Energy Balance Equation: eating the same number of calories that you burn each day.
Body Composition • Lean Mass: total body weight minus the weight due to fat. • Essential Fat: the amount of fat needed for certain metabolic processes to occur. • Storage Fat: excess fat stored in the body. • Overweight: weighing 10% more than one’s recommended weight. • Obesity: a condition in which one weighs 20% more than the recommended weight.
Anorexia Nervosa • An eating disorder in which the person refuses to eat because of a fear of weight gain
Health Hazards • Heart rate, BMR and body temperature drop to low levels • Because fat is used up, the body breaks down muscle tissue for energy (this can cause permanent heart damage) • Sexual maturity and growth stops • As many as 10% die without treament
Treatment of Anorexia • Requires a team of medical professionals • Mental health counseling • Sometimes involves temporary force feeding • Early treatment is essential to prevent permanent damage
Bulimia • An eating disorder based on a cycle of bingeing and purging food
Health Hazards • Tooth enamel damage • Enlarged salivary glands • Damage to esophagus • Heart and kidney damage • Disturbed electrolyte balance • Abnormal bowel function • High blood pressure • Dehydration
Treatment • Professional training in appropriate eating habits • Participate in activities that develop confidence and self esteem • May be hard to diagnose because individuals weight appears normal
Pica • A little-known eating disorder that involves eating substances not normally considered food, such as clay, soil and laundry starch
Health Hazards • Ingesting harmful bacteria • Changes the way minerals are absorbed in the body, therefore leading to mineral deficiencies • Large quantities can block intestines
Disorders Affecting the Digestive System • Diarrhea • Constipation • Food allergies • Food intolerances • Ex: lactose intolerance
