  3. Direct Objects • to find a direct object in a sentence… • Find the subject. • Find the verb. • Ask “What?” or “Whom?” AFTER the verb. • The answer is the direct object (DO). • For Example: • Paul bought the flowers. V S DO

Direct Object Pronouns(DOPs) • direct objects often replaced with directobjectpronouns (in English & Spanish) to avoid repetition • For Example: • Paul bought the flowers. • Paul took the flowers home and gave the flowers to his wife. • Paul bought the flowers. • Paul took them home and gave them to his wife.   5. Direct Object Pronouns(DOPs) • In Spanish, the following pronouns are used to replace the direct object:

  6. Position of DOPs • BEFOREconjugated verb in an affirmative sentence with one verb • For Example: • Paul bought the flowers. • Paul bought them. • Paul compró las flores. • Paul lascompró.

  7. Position of DOPs • BETWEENthe “no” and the conjugated verb in a negative sentence • For Example: • Mariana did not eat the grapes. • Mariana did not eat them. • Mariana nocomió las uvas. • Mariana nolas comió.

  8. Position of DOPs • ATTACHit to an infinitive or presentparticiple (presentprogressive – “-ing” ) • can also be placed in front of the conjugated verb • For Example: • ¿Vas a comer el helado? • Voy a comerlo ahora. • Estoy comiéndolo ahora. • No, no loquiero comer ahora.

  9. PRACTICAMOS… • Juan ate the sandwich. • Juan lo comió. • I love them. (them = mixed group) • Los amo. • Maria has the magazines. • María las tiene. • We call her. • Nosotros la llamamos.
