CORRUPT WORDS • What makes a word corrupt? • The idea it communicates • Words are vehicles for ideas • Ideas begin in the heart Luke 6:43-45 • Corrupt (Greek SAPROS) rotten fruit, bad fish • Corruption spreads if not eliminated • Society recognizes corrupt speech • Dirty words, filthy language, cursing, swearing, profanity, vulgarity

CORRUPT WORDS • Dirty jokes and filthy language Eph. 5:3-4 • Not to be named among saints • Language referring to private body parts and functions • Body parts that generate life were not profanely mentioned out of respect for life • Time and place for everything Eccl. 3:1; Hb 13:4 • Right way vs. wrong way to talk about anything • “Course jesting” EUTRAPELIA “well-turned” • Lack of respect for self

CORRUPT WORDS • Cursing others “Drop dead!” • Condemning to eternal punishment Jm 4:11-12; 5:9; Romans 12:14 • Ex. 21:17; 22:28; 2 Sam. 16:5-13 • Lack of respect for others • Swearing is calling curses upon oneself if lying Job 31:8,10,22 • Peter swore he did not know Jesus Matt. 26:74 • Jesus said don’t do it Matt. 5:33-37 • Lack of respect for self, others, and God

CORRUPT WORDS • Blaspheming God’s name • Lev. 24:10-23; 20:9 • God’s name is holy and not to be treated lightly • Not keep oaths made in His name • Can blaspheme w/o saying a word Ezekiel 36:20 • Lack of respect for God • Vulgarity and profanity • Treating lightly what is to be respected • Idle words commonly overused and misused • Lack of respect for self, others, and God

  6. Words Have Power • James 3:1-12 • Power to discourage Numbers 13-14 • Power to encourage Heb 3:12-13 • Power to destroy reason for death penalty • Power to save Rom. 1:16, James 1:21 • Must believe it • Must obey it James 1:22 • You can have its power by letting His word abide in you
