Students will learn to express numbers in both standard and expanded forms, such as 3358 and 10,563, and practice speaking them in English and French. The unit covers decimals, multiplication, and division of numbers ranging from 0.01 to 100,000. With a focus on understanding and ordering values, the material includes essential tools like place value charts for organizing numbers effectively.

  1. Number Sense and Numeration Place Value

  2. What do you call the following number (how would you say it using words)?3358 • And this one?795 • And this one?9641 • And this one?10 563 • Now try to say them en français! Minds On

  3. Now that I know you can do that, we are ready to begin our next math unit, which includes: • Place value • Decimals • Multiplying • Dividing Moving on to a new unit

  4. Numbers from 0.01 (2 decimal places) to 100 000 (one hundred thousand) • How to understand and compare the value of these numbers • How to put these numbers in order • How to write these numbers using number form and word form • How to add, subtract, multiply and divide these numbers What you need to know...

  5. STANDARD FORM – The way we usually write numbers (using numbers). When numbers greater than 9999 are written in standard form, the thousands part is separated from the rest of the number with a space to make it easier to read (e.g. 10 000) SPACE • EXPANDED FORM – A way to write a number that shows the value of each digit (e.g. In expanded form, 2365 is 2000+300+60+5 or 2 thousands 3 hundreds 6 tens 5 ones.) Important Terms

  6. In order to be able to write numbers out in either standard or expanded form, you have to know where the place values fall in order • One tool we can use for this is a place value chart, which helps us to organize the numbers (in standard form) into the correct place values • We do that by writing our number into the correct columns (the easiest way to do this is to line up the ones column first and fill in the rest of the numbers around it) • The next slide shows us what a place value chart looks like Place Values
