  2. How the World Wide Web Works • The world wide web is a number growing of pages that are linked together. Is a document on the web consisting of HTML. • If you want to view a web page you need to have a web browser such as internet explorer or other… • Each part of the address in the address bar represents something just like http://www.edulaunch.com/studen_showcase/Bachelor_bet.htmlrepresents • http:// - This is a “Protocol Prefix” that designates the file being requested as accessible via Hypertext Transfer Protocol. • www - designates a requested file as World Wide Web document, originally needed to distinguish between Web files and other Internet files, this is often no longer needed. For example, you can go to edulaunch’s web site by typing http://www. edulaunch.com or just http:// edulaunch.com • edulaunch - Domain name that points to the server computer of the edulaunch web site. • .com – Domain Name Extension designated for web sites with a commercial focus • student_showcase - Directory or folder within which the web page being requested is located. • bachelor_bet.html - This is the name of the exact file requested. You may be wondering: • What is the purpose of slashes?  They signify that you are moving deeper within the web site by entering a new folder or directory.  For example, the bachelor_bet.html file is inside the student_showcase directory. • When you open your web browser, type in the address of your favorite web site and press the Enter key, you are setting off a chain reaction across the United States and perhaps the whole world!

Searching The Web • When you navigate through the world wide web you are said you are “surfing the web”. • Spiders, robots, crawlers, or intelligent agents are software programs that search the web and record information. • Most search engines allows you to submit information about your web page directly to their database. • The directory is used to search for similar websites to the one they are looking for, one of the most popular ones is www.yahoo.com • You can keep looking until you find the link that contains all the info. You want. • Web searches only cover 20%-40% of the web the rest is compose of firewalls, password protections, and flash sites…etc • When searching the web most people just go to a search web and type what they are looking for.. • The web has become an integral part of the lives of people all ages. It has made everything easier..for example you can pay your bills online and look for book and even shop and so much more
