  1. Can We Harness Solar Wind As Energy? By Eric Eggen, Samir El Idrissi, and Daniel Zheng

  2. Useful Vocabulary • Sub-atomic- Smaller than an atom. • Electron- Sub-atomic particle with a charge of negative energy. • Atomic- Relating to an atom. • Quantum- A small amount of energy due to the size of the amount of radiation it represents. • Electro Magnetic- Relating of electric currents and magnetic fields. • Photons- A particle representing a quantum of light or other electromagnetic radiation. A photon carries energy proportional to the frequency of radiation.

  3. What Is Solar Wind? • Solar wind is energy released from the surface of the sun. It mostly consists of electrons and photons. • Solar wind is streaming off the sun 1 million miles per hour. • If someone harnesses the energy of solar wind for earth we would have 100 billion times the power we have now. • It is the ultimate renewable energy source, and if harnessed could solve the energy crisis.

  4. Hypothesis Solar wind can be harnessed by a revolutionary machine called the solar sail. The energy harnessed from the solar sail will be stored and later used for us on earth

  5. What Is The Solar Sail? The Solar Sail uses the photons and electrons from the solar wind as a current and conducts electro-magnetic energy to be transported and used on earth. This device was invented by a Finnish meteorologist named, Jean-Pierre Lebreton.

  6. What Are The Procedures • 1. Gather the needed equipment (Cardboard, Model magic, various spray paint, straws) • 2. Create a solar sail model • 3. Spread the word of this new source of clean power

  7. What We Learned

  8. Conclusion In this project we learned many things. We learned that solar wind could be a potential energy source. We learned about the countless number of ways that energy from a solar sail can be taken back to Earth. And most importantly, we learned that this could be the answer humanity has been waiting for. With our fossil fuels declining at a fast rate and some renewable energy sources being expensive, the solar sail would be a huge project that would cost billions, but would make up for its costs in the trillions.
