  1. OXIDATION Heather Chong (10) Nicolette Lee (15) Ma Cheng Yu Chanel (18) Sarah Mok (21)

  2. Contents • Definition • What is/is not Oxidation • What happens? (Process) • Landforms formed • Examples • Factors • Bibliography

  3. Definiton -Rocks exposed to O2 in AIR or WATER -(Chemical terms) -Interaction between oxygen molecules and different substances they may come into contact with -Loss of at least one electron -Changes colour (E.g. grey to reddish-brown)

  4. What is/is NOT OXIDATION? • Oxidation ≠ Rusting • Opposite of OXIDATION=REDUCTION • Can be good or bad

  5. Processes involved in Oxidation • Oxygen combines with compound elements in rocks to form oxides. • Combines with iron-bearing silicate minerals causing “ rusting ”. • Iron oxides produced • Red, orange or brown

  6. Landforms Formed by Oxidation • Formation of minerals, mobilization of minerals • In some depositional environments • Redoxstate can be seen in rock’s colour • Red = Oxidizing conditions of formation • Green = Reducing conditions • White (Bleached rock) = Reducing conditions. • E.g: Uranium deposits and Moquimarbles

  7. Landforms Formed by Oxidation • E.g.Uranium mine, near Moab, Utah. • Note alternating red and white/green sandstone - corresponds to oxidized and reduced conditions in groundwater redox chemistry. • Rock forms in oxidizing conditions, and is then “ bleached " to white/green state when reducing fluid passes through rock

  8. Factors • Amount of oxygen present in air • Nature of material • Temperature • Precipitation • Presence of layer of protection

  9. Bibliography • http://facstaff.gpc.edu/~pgore/geology/geo101/weather.htm • http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-oxidation.htm • http://soil.gsfc.nasa.gov/soilform/weather.htm • http://www.thefreedictionary.com/oxidation

  10. THANK YOU! ANY QUESTIONS?
