  13. Ch. 21.2 Aquatic Ecosystems Ocean Zones: 1. Photic Zone: shallow enough for sunlight to penetrate. 2. Aphotic Zone: deep water, never receives sunlight.

  14. Zones Along the Ocean’s Edges: • Intertidal • Neritic (shallow water, plankton) • Oceanic (deep water) Estuary: area of water where fresh and salt water mix.

  15. Freshwater Zones: • Lakes & Ponds Eutrophic- rich in organic matter and vegetation. Oligotrophic- contain little or no organic matter. 2. Rivers & Streams 3. Freshwater Wetlands -marshes and swamps
