  2. Welcome Thank you for being here today!! You are Building Assets for your child just by being here. Who Influenced You? -Identify an adult or adults who influenced you in a positive way. -Think about what that person did that impacted you.

  3. Objectives Introduction to Developmental Assets. Understand what the Developmental Assets are. How the Developmental Assets impact my childs' success. Assess the Developmental Assets you are currently demonstrating. Identify the developmental assets you want to focus on. Develop a plan to build these assets in your childs’ life.

  4. 40 Developmental Assets Developed by the Search Institute a non-profit organization. After the list was made, researchers found hundreds of studies that support the choice of these assets. The 40 developmental assets are the building blocks that young people need to grow up healthy , caring and productive.

  5. The Developmental Assets Research is based on STRENGTHS not WEAKNESS The research that Developmental Assets is based on focuses on what is right with the kids who are doing well despite adversity. -What were there strengths? -How do we affirm and build those strengths?

  6. Activity ~Please look at the Developmental Assets ~Choose two assets that you do with your child well ~Share one of those with the person sitting in front or behind you ~Share the other that you chose with the person sitting to one side of you

  9. Personal Power and Assets • Studies have associated Commitment-to-Learning assets directly or indirectly with: • Increased high school completion • Increased enrollment in college • Higher grades • Higher achievement test scores • Better attendance • Less drug use • Fewer conduct problems

  10. Are you ready to build Assets? Start small, introduce yourself to the young people in your life. Commit to developing a relationship-have a weekly pizza night or pancake breakfast with your child and a friend. Ask opinions of your child and listen. What do the kids want to talk about? Model courtesy, respect, positive talk and expect the same.
