  3. Congress Becomes a Government • Second Continental Congress began to govern the colonies such print money, set up post office and establish committees and militias • Chose George Washington to be Commander of the new army.

Olive Branch Petition • Congress sent a petition or formal request to George III • Assured the king of the colonists’desire for peace • As the king to protect the colonists’ rights which they felt that Parliament seemed determined to destroy. • The king refused and in response sent 30,000 Hessian soldiers to the colonies

  5. The Colonies Take the Offensive • Washington surrounded the Boston with the Continental Army • British forced out of Boston and flees to Nova Scotia • Patriots invades Canada • Captured Montreal • Failed to take Quebec…..sorry Benedict Arnold
