  4. And now, in the Year of the Horse, the Australian Business Chamber will gallop ahead (Artwork from Melbourne Cup promotional material in Australia)

  5. Why the Melbourne Cup? It’s Business • AusCham is a Business Chamber in Vietnam. The Melbourne Cup is about business: • In 2013, 104,000 attended the Race; three million Australians and an estimated 700 million people from 120 countries watched it on television. • Business people fly into Melbourne from around Australia, Asia and other countries with their VIP customers and stakeholders to entertain them in the iconic “Birdcage” marquees. • It attracts big sponsorships to fund the Race’s AUD6.2m (USD5.8m) purse, the richest prize in Australian sport. • In 2013, the Melbourne Cup Carnival generated AUD365m of gross economic benefit to the Victorian economy. • The Melbourne Cup, like business, is international. Last year 11 of the 24 runners were internationally-trained horses while 19 of the runners were bred in Europe.

  6. Why the Melbourne Cup? It’s Vietnamese • This year, 26,000 Vietnamese are studying in Australia. • Up t0 100,000 Vietnamese who studied in Australia (Australian Alumni) have returned to Vietnam. Many are involved in business. • The Melbourne Cup is an iconic Australian event. • The Melbourne Cup provides a cultural hook to engage and connect with more Australian Alumni. • Greater engagement with Australian Alumni reconnects them with Australia. • Greater involvement of Alumni with AusCham should lead to the creation of mutually beneficial opportunities for all parties.

  7. Why the Melbourne Cup? It’s FashiOn • Fashions on the Field at Flemington (Racecourse, Home of the Melbourne Cup) began in 1962. Hats are the signature fashion of Melbourne Cup. • It has been turning heads ever since. • The fashion industry showcases its wares. • It attracts women and men – with a passion for fashion.

  8. But the Saigon Melbourne Cup will be run on Derby Day, Saturday 1 November 2014? • Each year, the Melbourne Cup is held on the 1st Tuesday of November. Alas, in Saigon, we are at work. • Derby Day, however, is held the Saturday before (1 November this year). • Derby Day is a significant event in its own right attracting a 100,000 strong crowd with the highlight being the Victoria Derby worth AUD1.5m. • The Victoria Derby is held at 3pm local time which is 11am Saigon time – starting time for AusCham’s event. • Importantly, final acceptances and barrier draws for the Melbourne Cup are announced live at the conclusion of Derby Day.

  9. The Event Program

  10. A Day at the Races • There’s nothing better than “A Day at the Races” – and so this is a day time event. • Setting the tone of the day, the event will commence at 11am Saigon time to coincide with the running of the Victoria Derby. • A delicious gourmet lunch will be served with free flowing drinks including champagne and the fabled Flemington Fling. • The afternoon will comprise, “Phantom Races” and Saigon’s version of Fashions on the Field. • Live and recorded music will be played.

  11. The Races– And No Silent Auctions! • The Saigon Melbourne Cup is a “Silent Auction-Free Zone”! • Instead, we will raise money for charity by awarding fantastic prizes for those who back the winning horses… • 5 “Phantom Races” will be run. Each Race has 8 horses. People / tables will bid for the 8 horses. Top 8 bids get a horse each. Prizes are awarded to the first three place getters. The money spent on the horses is donated to charity. • People on each of the tables may elect to run their own “sweep” for each race. Each person on the table pays VND50,000 for a “lucky dip” horse on their own table. Money collected on the table is then divided between the three place getters (50K x 8 horses = 400K kitty. 1st gets 250K, 2nd gets 100K and 3rd gets 50K) • Please note, there will be no gambling at this event. Gambling is illegal in Vietnam.

  12. FashiOnsOn the ‘Gon. Amateurs • In Saigon, we will have Fashions On the ‘Gon. • Two weeks before Derby Day, Saturday 18 October, is Caulfield Cup Day. • People with tickets for the main event will be invited to audition on the Cat Walk on 18 Oct (venue tba). • Entrants will be invited to compete individually or in groups (eg school Vs school). • 10 entrants will be selected to compete in an amateur fashion show at the Saigon Melbourne Cupon 1 November. • Those who pass the audition, will be invited by celebrity, Thanh Bui, to attend complimentary “cat walk” lessons at his Soul Music Academy. • This is a warm up, pre marketing activity.

  13. FashiOnsOn the ‘Gon. Professionals • Professional Fashion Show • Vietnamese-Japanese hat designer, KanKanemura, has agreed to make 10 hats exclusively for the Saigon Melbourne Cup. They shall be worn by professional Vietnamese models wearing traditional aodias. • Giving the Melbourne Cup a strong Vietnamese flavour creates a unique event. • Discussions have already commenced with fashion media to run articles in Australia and Vietnam. Fashions on the Field, Melbourne Hat designed by KanKanemura

  14. Sponsorship Opportunities • The flexibility of the format for the Saigon Melbourne Cup is incredible: • The Saigon Melbourne Cup (incl. Naming Rights) • Fashions On the ‘Gon(incl. 16. The Timeline Sat, 1 Nov Melbourne Cup Sat, 1 November Saigon Melbourne Cup Mon, 31 Oct Melbourne Cup Calcutta Sat, 18 Oct Caulfield Cup Day Auditions for Fashion On the ‘Gon For 2.5 weeks, people will be talking about the Melbourne Cup. AusCham’s two events will heighten the level of interest for other parties to organise a Melbourne Cup Calcutta and to watch the Melbourne Cup itself on the Tuesday. Also, 24 tables at AusCham’s event will be given a horse each for the actual Melbourne Cup further increasing the level of interest.

  17. The Vision: Birth of a New Tradition • The Vision is for this to be the birth of a new tradition. • This event is expected to become an annual fixture on AusCham’s calendar in HCMC – and Hanoi (and possibly Hoi An / Danang. • Each year, it will build on the year before. • The “Marquee Race” at the Saigon Melbourne Cup will be The Race that Stops Saigon. Its beginnings, this year, will be modest. But it will grow into an Amazing Race where an incredibly amazing package, limited only by a sponsor’s imagination, will be awarded to the owner of the winning horse. • The Race that Stops Saigon will see increased bids for the eight horses which, in turn, will raise more desperately needed funds for the designated charity.

  18. The Saigon Melbourne Cup… • Celebrates an iconic Australian event. • Draws people together, especially the Vietnamese who have studied in Australia. • Will raise increasing amounts of funds for charity in a novel , exciting and inclusive manner. • Provides an amazing opportunity for sponsors to piggy back an event that will generate a truly unique branding experience in Vietnam.
