  1. Field Research for Measuring New York City Municipal Solid Waste in Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn \Author: Ivan David SeguraFaculty Mentor: Prof. Masato R. NakamuraDepartment: Mechanical Engineering Technology Field Work –Measurement of Municipal Solid Waste in Garbage Cans - Abstract Solid waste management in New York City, having the highest population density in the United States, is important for keeping the City clean in the aspect of sanitation. A field work in Brooklyn Cadman Plaza was carried out in order for measuring amount of solid waste in garbage cans. We found that the large amount of garbage in the Plaza has been generated and potentially would be a large draw for vermin. It also has high traffic due to restaurants, shops, offices, courts, tourist and general use of the Plaza by residents. This food resource is left in the Plaza until is collected. The density of solid waste in garbage cans is also calculated. It also gives us an estimate on the potential food resources available for vermin. The calculation of individual cans usage will lead to a better planning and placement of garbage cans in the future. Keywords: New York City Municipal Solid Waste (NYCMSW), Garbage cans, Food waste generation, Urban sanitation Field Work Results- Mapping (Google Map) - Summary and Future Work • Measuring solid waste in garbage cans in different times • Calculate a volume of waste in garbage cans • Constant monitoring of solid waste generation https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zbEsPCBKabJQ.k14Ihu7SjIMY
