  2. Beginnings • Started in 1935 • Under Roosevelt’s 1st New Deal

  3. Purpose • Intended to help people who lost their jobs during Depression. • Helped people preserve skills they had learned in their jobs they lost • Helped workers maintain self esteem • Located across the country

  4. Accomplishments • Employed 8.5 million • By 1943 workers built: • 78,000 bridges • 116,000 buildings • 651,000 miles of public roads
