Health Services Research SIGOctober 2010 – September 2011 • Newly established SIG (no previous WHI focus on health services research or claims data) • About 45 members initially expressed interest, about 4-5 new members joined • Monthly calls are attended by about 10-20 core members • 3 working groups established to focus on more specific topics, also meet monthly: • Cardiovascular disease & diabetes • Cancer • Bone/Joint/Immunology • Small group dedicated to implementation issues (Project Office, SIG chair, SIG co-chair, OAC Chair and CCC), meets 1-2x per month

  2. Initial Focus of SIG • Bringing together researchers with knowledge of WHI’s more traditional lines of research and researchers with health services research background/ CMS experience • Clarifying data sources and availability (updating data to 2010 and Part D requests in process) • Training of WHI statistical analysts to work with CMS data • Establishing procedures and timeline for analytical access to data from outside CCC that protects WHI participants’ privacy (data enclave)

Manuscripts using CMS data Approved by P&P • Effects of hormone therapy on incidence of atrial fibrillation in WHI Hormone Trials • Risk factors for atrial fibrillation in WHI OS • Agreement of diabetes self-report compared with medical records and CMS claims • Identifying rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus using medicare claims • Breast cancer recurrence: estimates from the linked WHI-Medicare data • Agreement between CHD events based on Medicare claims data and CHD events adjudicated by WHI—Mark Hlatky • Agreement between stroke based on Medicare claims data and stroke adjudicated by WHI—KamakshiLakshminarayan • Assessment of Bias in WHI-Medicare Studies Limited to Fee-For-Service Enrollees—Liz Haberman

Manuscripts using CMS data under development • Continuity of care for patients with CVD and related risk factors in the WHI • Patterns of colorectal cancer screening in WHI • Diabetes and prognosis of breast cancer, colorectal cancer and lung cancer • Agreement between VTE based on Medicare claims data and VTE adjudicated by WHI • Agreement between PVD based on Medicare claims data and PVD adjudicated by WHI • Agreement between heart failure based on Medicare claims data and HF adjudicated by WHI • Atrial Fibrillation and Magnesium Intake in WHI—Lisa Martin
