What is SAFL? • Samskritam As a Foreign Language • 3 year online program (during the school year) • 8th – 12th graders • Prepare for University level study • Teaching methods specific to youth • Teach SamskritamthroughSamskritam • Independent study/foreign language credits
Why Samskritam? • Relevance to our culture/heritage • Helps with learning our mother tongue • Improves pronunciation • Helps with learning meanings of shlokas, lyrics for music/dance items
Why Samskritam through SAFL? • Structured learning experience • Interactive, fun learning atmosphere • Small class sizes (~10-15 students, 2 teachers) • Looks good on college applications

Teaching/Curriculum • Taught in Samskritam !! • Speaking, reading, writing • Year 1 – listening & speaking, touch upon grammar. Listen to clips of daily conversations. • Year 2– elementary grammar/reading/writing. One on one, weekly mentoring – conversation. • Year 3 – advanced reading/writing skills to prep for university level learning.
Course Details • Weekly, interactive, online class (mandatory) • Homework/quizzes/exams – graded • Technology requirements: • Computer/internet • Virtual classroom platform (provided for students) • Word processing software • Scanner • Audio recording software
Course Details (cont’d) • Books – provided as part of registration package • Time Commitment • Class (1.5 hours/week) • Homework/studying/quizzes (3-4 hours/week) • No commuting time! • Pre-requisites – none. • Student does not need to know how to write Devanagari script – will learn in year 1. • Recommendation – familiarity with an Indian language • Residential requirement • Week long, residential language immersion during summer), separate registration.

School Equivalency • Credits towards independent study/foreign language requirements • Based on school requirement • Final decision made by school • Public and private schools • SB provides students with information to petition school for credits
Registration • Online registration open once/year • Registration will start in March 2014 for September 2014 – May 2015 • Must register for one year at a time • 2014 - 2015 fees - $750/year includes books • Application Process: • Simply register online; safl.samskritabharatiusa.org • Interested in credit for independent study/foreign language requirement – speak with your school counselor
