  1. Energy Expenditure during Rest and Exercise

  2. BMR • Minimum level of energy required to sustain the body’s vital functions in a waking state. • Reflected in heat production • Determined by O2 consumption

  3. BMR • 12 hour fast • no physical activity • 30 minute rest/acclimation • 10 minute O2 consumption • energy baseline for weight control

  4. RMR • Resting Metabolic Rate • 3 - 4 hours following light meal • active metabolic processes & regulatory balance at rest • accounts for 60-75% of TDEE • feeding 10%, physical activity 15-30%

  5. RMR/BMR • LBM offers good index of BMR • BMR in females 5-10% < males • 2-3%  in BMR/decade  body fat

  6. RMR/BMR • Heavy resistance training in 50 - 65 y.o.  8%  in BMR • heavy resistance training can offset usual  in BMR that are associated w/ aging • 8 week aerobic training  10%  in BMR

  7. Estimated BMR

  8. Estimated MR per Hour • = body surface area (nomogram) * estimated BMR • nomogram - stature/height - body mass/weight - surface area

  9. Nomogram

  10. Factors Affecting Energy Expenditure • Physical Activity • Dietary-Induced Thermogenesis - obligatory - digestive process - facultative - sympathetic response • Climate

  11. Classification of Physical Activities • Physical Activity Ratio (PAR) - light work - 3x resting requirement - heavy work - 6x-8x - maximal work - 9x+

  12. MET • MET - multiple of RMR • 1 MET = 3.6 mL / kg-min

  13. MET • Males

  14. MET • Females

  15. Daily Expenditure • Age 23-50 • males - 2700 - 3000 kcal • females - 2000-2100 kcal • Body Mass  expenditure esp. w/b activities

  16. Body Mass & Expenditure

  17. HR to Estimate Expenditure • Linear relationship w/in a person • if HR is known then O2 uptake can be predicted w/ reasonable accuracy • validity - specificity??

  18. HR vs. O2 Uptake 220 Heart Rate (beats/min) 60 2.8 0.4 Oxygen Uptake (L/min)
