  1. Focus: What are the main tenets of Judaism? Do Now: Take a vocabulary sheet as you sit. Look over the words. Put a star next to each word you recognize from class this week.

  2. Vocabulary for Global History • Weekly or Bi-monthly • You get: term & definition • You need to: explain the SIGNIFICANCE (why is this an important term?) Sample terms: BCE CE Domesticate Nomad River valley

  3. Current Events!! • One per person for the year • Turn it in on WEDNESDAY • Who/What/Where/When/Why!!! • Be ready to be quizzed on weekly presentations!!

  5. 2. Beginnings of Judaism • Palestine—bridge between Africa and Asia • Founder: Abraham is considered the father of the religion • Moses—some consider him the actual founder • 1300-1200 BCE—led Hebrew slaves out of Egypt

Major Tenets • Monotheistic • Belief in one god, in Hebrew, “Yaweh” • All powerful being, no images created of him • Holy Texts • Torah: tells history of the Hebrew people • First 5 books of Hebrew Bible (and Christian Bible) • Ten Commandments (Exodus 19-20) • Talmud: book of Jewish Law and its interpretations • Covenant with God • God will protect the people/the people will obey God • God will send a Messiah (who has not arrived yet) • Rituals • Rabbis • Synagogues—temples/places of worship • Sabbath

  7. 4. Kingdom of Israel • 3 Kings: 1020 BCE-922 BCE • Saul • David • Solomon • Kingdom splits after 922 BCE • Israel (North) • Judah (South) • Babylonians take over • Roman Army takes Palestine, expels Hebrews in 1st century BCE
