  5. The Nile is the world's longest river through the north-western area of Africa, and then into the Mediterranean Sea. It is the birthplace of the ancient Egyptian civilization, known as Egypt’s “river of life”. The Nile valley is a fertile one where there is an abundance of water and sun.he annual floods left precious silt on the fields, a miraculous natural fertilizer which made the crops grow luxuriantly. Today, more than 70 million people still grow crops in the river's basin and fish in its waters.

Most were built as tombs for the country's Pharaohs and their consorts during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods. It is the representative work of the ancient Egyptian civilization. These customs involved preserving the body by mummification, performing burial ceremonies, and interring with the body goods the deceased would use in the afterlife. The most famous Egyptian mummies are those of Seti I, Rameses II, and Tutankhamun (13th century BC).
