  1. Song Numbers X

  2. The Obedience of Faith • Romans 1:5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles, for His name's sake, • Romans 15:15-19 • 18 For I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed, • 19 in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Spirit; so that from Jerusalem and round about as far as Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. Obedience

  3. The Obedience of Faith • Romans 16:25-27 • 25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, • 26 but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith; • 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen. Obedience

  4. I. Obedience Begins with Authority Where Authority Is Found.. Obedience Is Always Present. Parent/Child Relationship Eph 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Obedience

  5. I. Obedience Begins with Authority Where Authority Is Found.. Obedience Is Always Present. Government..Citizen Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Obedience

  6. I. Obedience Begins with Authority Where Authority Is Found.. Obedience Is Always Present. God…man Relationship Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. Obedience

  7. I. Obedience Begins with Authority Christ has ALL Authority • Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Obedience

  8. II. Obedience Responds to Specific Actions Authorized. • Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. • The Specification of One Act Authorizes Only the Doing of that Act. • Deut. 12:32 "Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it. • 2 John 9 Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. Obedience

  9. II. Obedience Responds to Specific Actions Authorized. • The specification of one act is never respected by being substituted. • 1. Example of Moses - Numbers 20:2-12 • 2. Example of Nadab and Abihu – • Lev 10:1 Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. Obedience

  10. II. Obedience Responds to Specific Actions Authorized. • Baptism is a burial; substitution of sprinkling or pouring is disobedient substitution. • Romans 6:4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. • Colossians 2:12having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. Obedience

  11. II. Obedience Responds to Specific Actions Authorized. • The extension to others than to whom a command is given is not obedience. • Example of Noah Building the ark • Example of Jews Keeping the Sabbath Day. • Colossians 2:14-17 • 16 Therefore let no one act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day — • 17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ. Obedience

  12. II. Obedience Responds to Specific Actions Authorized. • The extension to others than to whom a command is given is not obedience. • Baptism is commanded of unsaved believers. • Mark 16:16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. • Baptism of infants (incapable of believing) is not obedience. • Baptism of already saved believers is not obedience. • Including those already Christians. • Including those who believe they were already saved. Obedience

  13. III. Obedience requires attention to details. • Example of Noah – Size, Gopher Wood, door and window (etc). • Gen 6:22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did. • Example of Naaman - Jordan River seven times. • 2 Kings 5:10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you and you shall be clean." Obedience

  14. III. Obedience requires attention to details. • When “Place” is specified • Ephesians 3:21 to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. • Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. Obedience

  15. III. Obedience requires attention to details. • When Time is specified • Acts 20:7 And on the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to depart the next day, and he prolonged his message until midnight. • Therefore, no Lord’s Supper on Thursday night, etc. Obedience

  16. III. Obedience requires attention to details. • When Time is specified • 1 Corinthians 16:1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I directed the churches of Galatia, so do you also. • 2 On the first day of every week let each one of you put aside and save, as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come. • Therefore, no collections on Wed. nights or during Gospel Meetings, etc. Obedience

  17. III. Obedience requires attention to details. • When agent or means is specified. • Ephesians 5:19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; • Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. • Therefore, since the instrument is not the heart (i.e., singing); the action (playing) is not authorized. Obedience

  18. IV. Obedience depends on the teaching. • Matthew 28:18-20 • 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. • 19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, • 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. " • The Teaching results from the Authority Obedience

  19. IV. Obedience depends on the teaching. • Concept: “The Obedience of Faith” • Romans 1:5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about theobedience of faith among all the Gentiles, for His name's sake, • Romans 15:18 For I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed, Obedience

  20. IV. Obedience depends on the teaching. • Concept: The Obedience of Faith • Romans 16:25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, • 26 but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith; Obedience

  21. IV. Obedience depends on the teaching. • What Faith? Faith in the operation of God; i.e., that God is forgiving transgressions. • Col 2:12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. • 13 And when you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, Obedience

  22. IV. Obedience depends on the teaching. • Word of Christ > hearing > Faith • Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. • Word of Christ > hearing > Faith > Obedience • Romans 6:17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, Obedience

  23. IV. Obedience depends on the teaching. • What if Preacher taught a thing not authorized? • Word of Men > hearing* > faith* > Disobedience • Galatians 1:6-9 • 6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; • 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you, and want to distort the gospel of Christ. • 8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed. • 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed. Obedience

  24. IV. Obedience depends on the teaching. • Why? Because People obey what they are taught. • Example in Corinth - Acts 19:1-5 • 1. Being taught John’s Baptism, they obeyed “John’s Baptism.” – not the baptism of the Lord. • 2. Fact: People can only obey what they are taught. • Romans 6:17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, Obedience

  25. IV. Obedience depends on the teaching. • Why? Because People obey what they are taught. • “Baptism is not essential to salvation, for our churches utter repudiate the dogma of ‘baptismal regeneration;’ but it is essential to obedience since Christ commanded it. • Hiscox, The Standard Manual for Baptist Churches, • p. 21 note 8 • If taught Baptism is not essential to salvation, that is what was obeyed. Obedience

  26. V. Obedience depends on the Authorized Purpose. • Purpose of Lord’s Supper: To remember the Lord’s Death • 1 Cor 11:24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." • 25 In the same way He took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." • If not purpose, eat and drink condemnation. • 1 Cor 11:29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself, if he does not judge the body rightly. • Point: It does not work if purpose is not right Obedience

  27. V. Obedience depends on the Authorized Purpose. • Acts 19:1-5 John’s Baptism – • Not to be added to the Lord’s Church • Were Baptized again. • The One Baptism – Eph 4:5 • In order to have the remission of sins – Acts 2:38 • To Be Saved - Rom 6:17-18; 1 Peter 3:21 • Recall: Obedience is one’s response to what was taught. Obedience

  28. IV. Obedience depends on the teaching. • Why? Because People obey what they are taught. • “ It (baptism) represents in an outward symbol the inward work of the Spirit, and shows how ;according to his mercy, he saved us by the washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the Holy Ghost,’ a work already performed upon the heart of the candidate, by the application of the cleansing blood of Christ.” • Hiscox, The Standard Manual for Baptist Churches, p. 32 • If taught Baptism occurred after the heart was cleansed of sin, that is what was obeyed. Obedience

  29. V. Obedience depends on the Authorized Purpose. • Obedience is one’s response to teaching • BAPTIST TEACHING: • Faith that God has already forgiven transgressions – • Faith that they were already alive • Col 2:12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. • 13 And when you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, Obedience

  30. V. Obedience depends on the Authorized Purpose. • Obedience is one’s response to what was taught. • BAPTIST TEACHING produces faith that you were already in Christ before baptism. • Rom 6:3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? • Gal 3:27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. Obedience

  31. Conclusion: Obedience is important to God. • And should be important to you and me. • 2 Thess 1:7-9 • …When the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, • 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. • 9 And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,… Obedience
