  2. Health in Past vs. Today • Health in the past-Infectious diseases were the most significant health problems in the past. • Health problems today are caused in part by unhealthy lifestyles. Diabetes, heart disease, and cancer are examples of lifestyle diseases.

Health in Past • Infectious diseases • Cholera- Some affected individuals have copious amounts of diarrhea and develop dehydration so severe it can lead to death. • Yellow fever is an acute viral infectious disease that is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Yellow fever is thought to have originated in Africa and was likely brought to the Americas on ships during the slave trade

Health in Past • Infectious diseases • Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection, primarily in the lungs caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. • Smallpox is an infectious disease of the past that was eliminated by vaccination. The disease was caused by the variola virus, which spread from person to person. Affected people became very ill with a high fever and a characteristic rash. Up to one-third of people with smallpox died.

Health Today • Heart Disease- Is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women. • Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. • Fatty material and other substances form a plaque build-up on the walls of your coronary arteries. The coronary arteries bring blood and oxygen to your heart. • This buildup causes the arteries to get narrow. • As a result, blood flow to the heart can slow down or stop.

  7. Health Today • Skin Cancer • Excessive exposure to sunlight is the main cause of skin cancer. Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) rays that can alter the genetic material in skin cells, causing mutations. Sunlamps, tanning booths, and X-rays also generate UV rays that can damage skin and cause malignant cell mutations.

Risk Factors and Your Health • A risk factor is anything that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other health problems. • Controllable Risk Factors- risk factors you can control by some choices. • Uncontrollable Risk Factors- risk factors you cannot control including age, race, gender, and heredity. • You can protect your health by focusing on controllable risk factors. • Know the leading causes of death for people in your age group. • Be aware of the leading causes of death for people of all ages.

  10. What is Health? • Health is the state of well being in which all the components of health are in balance. • Health may be categorized into three components: physical, emotional, and social. • Spiritual and environmental can be added as parts to the triangle.

  11. Three Main Components of Health-Physical • Physical Health refers to the way your body functions. • Eats a well balanced diet. • Exercise regularly. • Avoids tobacco, alcohol, and drugs.

  13. Three Main Components of Health-Physical • Environmental Health involves keeping your air and water clean, your food safe, and the land around you enjoyable. • Has access to clean air and water. • Has a clean and uncrowded living space. • Recycles used paper, glass products and aluminum.

  17. Three Main Components of Health-M/E • Spiritual Health involves having spiritual direction and purpose. This includes living according to one’s ethics, morals, and values. • Has a sense of purpose in life. • Follows morals and values. • Feels a unity with other human beings.

  18. Three Main Components of Health-Social • Social Health is the quality of your relationships with friends, family, teachers and others. • Respects others. • Has supportive relationships. • Expresses needs to others.

  19. Influences on Your Wellness • Heredity Influences • Social Influences • Cultural Influences • Environmental Influences • Write down what you think each one means.

  20. Taking Charge of Your Wellness • Knowledge-You need information to make good choices about your health. • Lifestyle-You can improve your health by making behavioral changes to your lifestyle. • Attitude-By focusing on your attitudes, you can act in ways that make you a healthier person.

Choose 5 to write down. • Be an Advocate-To advocate is to speak out or act in support of something. • Volunteer at a clinic. • Take meals to the elderly. • Promote health issues at school • Train for a career in a health field. • Set a good example through your behavior. • Be informed.

  23. Answer in your Journal • Choose an action that would improve your health. Name one barrier that might keep you from taking this action. Describe how you could set a goal to overcome this barrier. • Analyze positive and negative relationships that influence individual and community health, such as families, peers, and role models.
