Journal: Two Poems • “Us Two” • (1) Why is the line “Whatever I do, he wants to do” important? Is liking to do the same things important to being friends with someone? (2) In stanza 2, what characteristic of a friend is Pooh demonstrating when he says, “That’s what it is?” (3) Are the dragons really dragons in this poem or something else? If they are not, what does it mean that Pooh is willing to “play along?” (4) The narrator says “I’m not afraid” but he also hold’s Pooh’s paw. How can we make sense of both of these things? (5) In stanza 1, Milne writes that friends “go together” and in stanza 6, he writes that friends “stick together.” Is there a difference between these two things?
Journal: Two Poems • “I am a Rock” • Define the words “shroud” and “disdain” • (1) How does the word “shroud” help set the mood for the poem? What do we think has died? (2) How is a fortress that “none may penetrate” ambiguous (i.e. both positive and negative)? (3) Why does Simon choose the “rock” as his metaphor for someone rejecting friendship? (4) Is it realistic that someone could “feel no pain” or “never cry?” Are these things even desirable?
Journal Discussion • In what way do these two poems relate to the novel Of Mice and Men? • Which poem matches which character, when considering his view of friendship?

Student Responses: What is Irony? • “more than kinand less than kind” • The verbal irony in the statement “more than kin and less than kind” is saying he’s more of a family member than he is nice or kind to him [Claudius, his uncle/stepfather]. Hamlet is not happy about the marriage. He is pretending to be happy, and he is really being a smart butt. Hamlet is showing that he is not happy, but calm.
Kin means that you are related to other people. Kind is like you are really close to someone, that you can be related to each other. The meaning is saying that you are family but not really that close.
“I am too much in the sun” (pun = “son”) • Hamlet is saying that he is too much his son. Hamlet is not happy at all because his mother remarried after a month since his father’s death (to his uncle). Hamlet is not happy about it at all. Hamlet is now the son of the king, which is his uncle.
