  2. Parents, Childhood & Education • Born on 28th Sept 1982 in Dehradun, India. • Born in an affluent Punjabi/Sikh family. • Mother Babli & Father Apjit Singh. • Studied at the famous Doon school for 2 yrs. • Studied at St Stephens school Chandigarh. • Did his BBA from University of Colorado USA.

  3. Growing up • He had a keen interest in shooting as a child. • Father built him a range at his home in Patiala. • Received professional training from his childhood.

  4. Teachers & Coaches • Father Apjit Singh & Mother Babli Singh. • AmitBhattacharjee was his mental coach from his childhood days. • Lt Col Dhillon was the first to spot the talent in Bindra and promote and encourage it. • His coach was Swiss born Gabriele Buhlmann.

  5. Start of shooting career • Participated in the Commonwealth games in 1998 as the youngest participant at 15. • 2001 Munich shooting world cup. • Youngest participant in 2000 Sydney Olympic games.

  6. Early awards/ Accomplishments • 2001 Bronze medal at the World Shooting championship at Munich, Germany. • 2001 Six Gold medals in various events. • 2001: Rajiv Gandhi Sports award. • 2002: Gold medal at Air rifle event Commonwealth games. • 2006: World shooting championship, Zagreb. • 2006: Gold at Commonwealth games, Melbourne.

  7. Setback  • In 2006 missed the Asian games in Doha, Qatar due to a back injury. • The injury got worse & he could not lift a rifle. • He could not practice or compete for a full year before the next Olympics.

  8. Beijing Olympics 2008 • Abhinav Bindra became the first Indian to win a individual Gold medal in any sport. • The last Gold medal was won by the Indian hockey team in 1980. • He shot a score of 700.5 in the 10 meter rifle shooting event to stand first.

  9. Other victories • Won Silver medal at the Commonwealth games in Delhi 2010. • Won Gold at the Asian shooting championships in Doha, Qatar. • Lost in the qualification rounds of the London 2012 Olympics. • Winner Arjuna award in 2009.

  10. Inspiration • Abhinav Bindra serves as an inspiration to not just Indian children but to children all over the world. He proves that if you can practice and persist then success will come to you.
