  3. Victory in Europe • Fighting in the Atlantic: • 1943 – Battle of the Atlantic • Sonar was refined and used to find u-boats. Planes and fast battleships would go up ahead of supply ships and weed out German subs. The threat in the Atlantic was over in 1944. • Tuskegee airmen – All black fight pilot unit in WW2. Led assault on Sicily in 1943. They were so good, they were then used to bomb German supply and war factories. They lost very few pilots or planes!

  4. Victory in Europe George C. Marshall - Lead planner of D-Day invasion of France and operations. The U.S. finally had the pieces in place and support to attack German controlled France. Operation Fortitude – a Diversion from the real operation. Fake landing assault ships, supplies, and some real troops, that weren’t going to fight to set the stage. This was set up in Northeast France. Fake radio transmissions were sent out and we bombed the coast of northern France. Operation Overlord – Eisenhower commanded the invasion. D-Day – June 6th, 1944 – U.S. Forces invaded Normandy France. Nearly 5000 troop transports, landing craft, and war ships carried 150,000 U.S., British, and Canadian troops hit the Beaches of Normandy. U.S. Forces were led by General Omar Bradley. Planes pounded the Germans behind the beaches and dropped paratroopers all over France. The beaches were heavily fortified, but we pushed through 20 miles into France. By August, 1944, Paris was liberated and we pushed on toward Germany.

  5. Victory in Europe The Holocaust – The genocide of an entire group of people. Articles – www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/ The Death/Concentration Camp at Dachau shortly after being liberated.

  6. Victory in Europe Battle of the Bulge – Germany’s last stand. By September 1944, U.S. forces were in Germany. They stopped their advance to resupply and regroup. They fought in Northern France and the Ardennes Forest region. As we rested and regrouped, Hitler hit us with a huge force of troops. Germany – 200,000 Vs. U.S. – 80,000 Just as we were about to surrender (the 101st airborne was surrounded), We rushed in allied forces and pushed the Germans back. Their best and strongest offensive had failed. Francis Tsuzuki led a Japanese-American Battalion against the Germans. In January 1945 – We knew the Germans time was almost up. Yalta Conference – Meeting between FDR, Stalin, and Churchill. Decided how to occupy Germany; divide it after the war, and outlined the United Nations.

  7. Victory in Europe Election of 1944 – Guess Who? FDR is re-elected for a fourth time!!!!! Heading to Berlin to end the war in Europe. Attacks on German cities close to Berlin increased. First war in which civilians are actively targeted. As we get closer to Berlin, The British are circling from the south, and the Soviets are closing in from the East. We are plotting with Churchill to make sure Stalin doesn’t lay claim to new territories they are in (Non-aggression pact). April 30th, 1945 – Hitler commits suicide with his wife Eva Braun in his underground bunker in the ruins of Berlin. Germany officially surrenders on May 7th, 1945.
