  2. CURRENT SITUATION (as of 05 November 2004) MSG-1 • Disconnect Non-Essential Loads (DNEL) triggered 04/10/04 MSG-2 • Readiness to Ship Review (RSR) held. A few open issues were identified that need to be resolved before launch. It is currently thought that these will not impact the launch date. • EUMETSAT ground segment has been declared ready for MSG-2 Commissioning. • Launch slot slipped to June 2005 at the earliest due to launcher availability issues.

MSG-2 Commissioning Outline Satellite location during commissioning MSG-2 : 10.5 ± 0.4°W, inclination > 1° MET-8 (MSG-1) : 3.4 ± 0.25°W MET-7 : 0° MET-6 : 10°E GERB will start commissioning ~6 weeks after launch, unless this corresponds to the Sun avoidance season MSG-2 Commissioning is planned to finish in November 2005 MSG-2 planned entry into operational service Feb 2006 after relocation to 0° CURRENT SITUATION (as of 5th November 2004)

GERB-2 operational news since the last GIST Planned GERB data outages due to SSU to ESU + ESU to SSU swaps (solar eclipses by the moon), sun avoidance operations, EW station keeping manoeuvres, attitude slew manoeuvres (first due 09/11/04) 03 May 2004 Ground Station Antenna depointing ~1 hour data loss 31 May - 01 June & 07 July 2004 TSOL Jitter data transfer problems 31 July - 22 September 2004 GERB AutoSAFE anomaly 29 September 2004 GERB in switched to SUNBLOCK, due to blinded ESU, from the ground 04 October 2004 DNEL - GERB switched OFF 08 October 2004 GERB NORMAL mode re-established GERB OPERATIONAL DETAILS (as of 5th November 2004)

GERB-2 AutoSAFE Anomaly 31 July 2004 AutoSAFE triggered (DSM out of lock) 02 August 2004 Recovery to NORMAL failed (2nd AutoSAFE) 16-19 August 2004 Torque Level tests 23 August 2004 Recovery to NORMAL failed (QFM bit errors) 09 September 2004 Switch SAFE to SUNBLOCK fails (SW flag) 13 September 2004 GERB switched OFF and ON 17 September 2004 Incorrect SW configuration identified 18 September 2004 GERB in SUNBLOCK 22 September 2004 GERB in NORMAL GERB OPERATIONAL DETAILS (as of 5th November 2004)

  6. Planned Activities Operations & Commissioning Rehearsals at EUMETSAT. Implementation of AutoSAFE recommendations. Testing of the interface from EUMETSAT to RAL for dual data stream (MSG-1 & 2). Investigations into the use of sftp for GERB data transfer from EUMETSAT to RAL. Addition of TSOL jitter information onto the GERB data packet sent from EUMETSAT to RAL. Preparations for MSG-2 Commissioning - procedures, command files etc. GERB OPERATIONAL DETAILS (as of 5th November 2004)

  7. GERB-1 Integrated on MSG-2. GERB-3 Instrument at RAL for emergency power modifications. Will be stored at Imperial prior to launch. GERB-4 Under manufacture. OTHER GERB INSTRUMENTS (as of 5th November 2004)
