  2. Bookstart Sharing books and rhymes is fun, exciting and encourages a life long love of books and learning and by starting as early as possible, parents can really make a difference to their child’s life. Wendy Cooling MBE, Independent Book Consultant

  3. Bookstart - a public/private partnership The value of Bookstart including the three packs & other resources is approximately: £60 per child with the cost to the taxpayer being £15 per child

  4. Bookstart Free Resources In authority a Bookstart Pack is given to number children each year equating to resources of £***,*** each year

  5. Bookstart – the universal gift • Parents welcome the offer of good quality books for their children. • Bookstart it is a universal gift for all children - there is no stigma attached to receiving the gift and the message

  6. Bookstart packs • Bookstart (baby) pack Bookstart+ pack • 0-12 months 18-30 months • My Bookstart Treasure Chest • Nursery aged children

  7. Booktouch and Bookshine Bookshine For hearing impaired and deaf children 0 – 4 Booktouch For visually impaired/blind children 0 – 4 One age appropriate Booktouch or Bookshine pack can be given in addition to the usual Bookstart pack

Bookstart National Model for delivery • Bookstart Baby Bag – via Health Visitors at around the 7-9 month contact or libraries • Bookstart + pack – Primary access route is usually via Health Visitors at 2 - 21/2year review or from libraries or Early Years settings • My Bookstart Treasure Chest – for children in the year before they start school in partnership with providers in Early Years settings such as nurseries. • Booktouch and Bookshine – professionals working with blind and deaf children

  12. Bookstart – A Gift For Life The Bookstart Pack is a tool, a stepping stone to help guide parents and carers. It isn’t an ‘end product’ – it is just the beginning.

  14. Why Gift the Message ? Some parents needed more than the giving of a single Bookstart book pack in order to adopt the Bookstart philosophy of reading regularly with their young child.“Bookstart planting a seed for Life” Only 2% of children whose parents have low basic skills develop good skills in literacy or numeracy.Bookstart can help to signpost parents to family learning opportunities

Bookstart and Home-Start - Involving Parents The use of the home environment and of fathers, mothers and carers as the agents of early intervention, make Bookstart both cost effective and highly efficient in delivering outcomes. Home-Start supports parents in their homes to help them give their child the best possible start in life

How Can Home-Start Help ? • Help parents to access Bookstart packs through Health, Early Years and Library services • Encourage parents to share the contents of the packs with their children • Model singing rhymes and sharing books for fun with the children • Encourage parents to tell stories and read aloud to their child every day

How Can Home-Start Help ? • Promote the sharing of stories, books and rhymes with fathers, mothers and all carers • Encourage reading for pleasure and fun. • Become a Reading Setting – using Bookstart and Early Reading Connects • Hold and promote Bookstart Events - Bookstart Rhymetimes and National Bookstart Day • Encourage Library Membership – work in partnership with local library services
